Four players will make their Currie Cup debuts for the Sharks when they face off against Griquas on Friday.
Marco Wentzel, Sizo Maseko and Ryno Gerber will be turning out for the Durban team for the first time, while Edwin Hewitt will make his Currie Cup debut after featuring at Super Rugby level.
Having missed the entire Super Rugby season due to a wrist injury, Tim Whitehead returns to the fray at inside centre where he will partner Louis Ludik in the midfield.
Director of Rugby Brendan Venter admits that having Whitehead back in the mix is a big boost to the team.
"It was a bit of a relief to have Tim back on Friday evening, because we're quite short in the centres and he brings a wealth of experience and after performing well last year, he's excited about playing again and that opportunity he got on Friday would have given him a whole lot of confidence," Venter told the Sharks' official website.
"He's obviously been through some bad luck with that arm injury which went on longer than he had planned for, but he has been running with the team for quite a while and he has been doing skill work, so I don't think there will be any problems at all. And on Friday night he did very well."
Having sat out his suspension for a dangerous tackle, Butch James takes over the number ten jersey from Pat Lambie who is on international duty.
Odwa Ndungane will slot in at full-back, a position that he looks set to become familiar with now that Riaan Viljoen has left the region.
"We had the players tested and Odwa was the third fastest player in our group, we were very impressed with his stats, his conditioning is fantastic and he's a leader," explained Venter.
"We see him primarily as a full-back now. He will help to give our backline some zip as well. He's experienced, he organises the backs, he kicks the ball out of hand beautifully so after losing Riaan, we're very privileged to have Odwa who steps in there."
