Stefan Terblanche is stopped in his tracks by Doppies la Grange
The Lions were crowned Currie Cup champions after an emphatic 42-16 win over the Sharks in Johannesburg.
This was the Johannesburg-based team's first victory in the competition since 1999 and they outscored the Sharks by three tries to one.
Fly-half Elton Jantjies was his side's hero, contributing 24 points via five penalties, three conversions and a drop-goal.
The Lions dominated proceedings from the outset and led 19-6 at half-time.
They raced into a 3-0 lead after Jantjies slotted a penalty and two minutes later Jaco Taute extended their lead when he hit a monster penalty from a distance of 57 metres.
The Sharks struck back with a penalty of their own by Frederic Michalak five minutes later but after that the Lions took the game by the scruff of the neck with two further penalties by Jantjies and a converted try by Michael Killian.
The speedy left wing scored his try after Doppies la Grange did well in the build-up by slipping past the Sharks defence before getting his pass away to the Killian who got in for an easy try.
With the score at 19-3, the Lions were cruising but the Sharks got an opportunity to get back into the match when CJ van der Linde received a yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Keegan Daniel.
The Sharks tried to take advantage of their numerical advantage and came close to crossing the Lions' try-line shortly after Van der Linde's exit but resilient defending by the hosts kept them at bay.
After the break, the Sharks upped the ante and Michalak narrowed the gap with a penalty in the 44th minute before Jantjies cancelled his effort out with a well taken drop-goal shortly afterwards.
A converted Willem Alberts try brought the Sharks back into the match and for a while it looked like they were going to repeat the comeback which they made against the Cheetahs in last week's semi-final.
But their lack of discipline, especially at the breakdown and in the scrums, cost them dearly. Beast Mtawarira in particular was penalised several times for illegal scrummaging.
Jantjies punished these indiscretions with three further penalties and Lions tighthead prop Pat Cilliers barged over the whitewash in the 55th minute to edge his team closer to victory.
The hosts sealed the win in fine style when Taute scored in the left hand corner after Killian cut the Sharks defence to shreds with a fine attacking run.
Man of the match: Although this was a good team effort Lions fly-half Elton Jantjies gave a faultless goal-kickicking display which paved the way to victory for the hosts.
Moment of the match: After Willem Alberts had brought the Sharks back into the match with his try, Pat Cilliers took the wind out of their sails when he burrowed his way over the try-line. Jantjies converted to give his side a 29-16 lead, which meant the Sharks had to score two converted tries to take the lead.
Villain of the match: Referee Mark Lawrence did not need to use any of his cards for ill discipline but Beast Mtawarira's indiscipline at the scrums cost his side dearly especially when they were trying to get back into the game in the second half.

Some of the best provincial rugby we've seen from an SA team in a while - and the way the game should be played, with reliance on heart, team spirit and innovation. The last Lion's try was pure genius - from the break in midfield, to the run through the defence, to the offload. Just shows how short SA was sold by PDV and his reliance on Jake's squad. Kudos to John Mitchell.

Wonderful match - where were these guys during RWC? And BokVanDam, after RWC you made us all happy by promising to give up watching rugby - how come you're back?

enter the lion rough and ready
enter the shark cold and deadly
stick them in a bowl of coca cola
add some fans and stick in the blender
and whats the message of this sad little tale?
if a shark` downs a lion` he feels satisfied,but if you add coke he`ll sulk --
only a SAFFA will understand that one ------

Well said. This shows that somebody was seriously overlooked. Based on reputation, this game should have won by Sharks by 25+. It is also scary that Shark's front row failed to make an impact.

The Lions must make sure that the other provinces don't poach there players. This has been one of there problems in the past. They need to look after all of there players. John Mitchell deserves a lot of credit for developing this team. And what I also like is that he has built a young team. This seems to be a trend with Kiwi coaches. If you look at the Welsh national coach he has done the same. If I am not mistaken John Mitchell is now the 3rd kiwi coach to ever win the Currie Cup, the others are Laurie Mains & John Plumtree. There is no doubt in my mind at all that he should become the next Springbok coach. Because of his experience with the Lions he also has built up a lot of knowledge about South African Rugby. But I am sure that the Lions will not want to lose him. They will probably offer him the Crown Jewels to make sure that he stays with the Lions.

I loved seeing that try where Lambie and JP. Pietersen were completely outclassed. I think it's great that South Africa have such talent lurking. It will only boost the level of rugby in the next few years. What a game for the Lions. And, historically, a strong Lions team usually means strong rugby in the Republic.

@ telbok... are you trying being ironic? Or is it mandatory to have a crack at the ref if your handle includes the letter sequence b,o,k?

Try 2/1000:
Well, well now the Kiwi's has won the world cup and the Currie cup!
Wasnt that pretty!! Well done Lions, you deserved that! I loved the look on
Plumtree's face with the rest of the dumbfounded Sharks supporters!
Main problem with the Sharks today was their old men in Stefan Terblanche and Marius Joubert.
10 to 1 the Sharks will now go into crisis management mode and buy 10 Lions & 5 Cheetahs & another French player!

What an exciting match played in a wonderfull stadium. Great to see Ellis park, now Coca Cola Park, filled to the brim and with a positive energy as the home fans were rewarded with magnificent rugby and their team outplaying a great and talented Sharks team. Congratulations to the Lions Team and John Mitchell and his team. Some of the most exciting rugby I have seen in years in South Africa.

Mark Lawrence's officiating was very poor, missed loads of infringements from both sides. I am a Sharks fan, but we were outplayed today in all departments. Full credit to the Lions for their victory today and for consistent displays throughout the tournement.
Is Mark Lawrence related to Bryce by any chance?

Well, no argument there. Well done Lions, great team, great win.
I hope to see quite a few of the Lions wearing the the Bok jersey next year.
A couple of thoughts:
Can we have a Sharks team next year instead of a collection of good individual players? (including a pair of centres. We havent been the same since Strauss escaped back to Bloem)
How good could the Boks be with Mitchell as coach?

Wow, just shows you what heart can do. Congratulations lions. They have beaten 2 teams in the past few weeks that are loaded with Boks. Just proves that the Boks need some serious overhaul. Will be really intersting to see how the lions shape up in the Super 15 next year. Sharks maybe over confident!!! Well played lions
