Robbie Fruean: Sealed the win for Canterbury with an intercept try

Canterbury set up a repeat of last year's ITM Cup final against Waikato after beating Otago 29-16 in Dunedin on Saturday.

However, the three-time defending champs are forced to travel to Hamilton this time out after they missed out on the four-try bonus point.

Canterbury finished level in the ITM Cup standings with Waikato on 33 points. But under ITM Cup rules, Waikato, who scored four tries to beat Auckland, get hosting rights next Saturday because they beat Canterbury in the round-robin.

Tyler Bleyendaal, Robbie Fruean and Tom Taylor all scored tries for the visitors, with Bleyendaal kicking the remaining 14 points.

Ben Smith scored Otago's sole try, with full-back Glenn Dickson adding the rest via the boot.

Ramage says...

But for the wrong call of the Hometown Manawatu assistant referee which allowed Manawatu to win the game between Manawatu and Taranaki this game would have seen Taranaki facing Waikato at New Plymouth. Such an important impact on a final by a home town assistant referee advising the referee the try was legitimate. Does he sleep well knowing he denied a team the chance to win the ITM cup. Will he be appointed again? Knowing the way referees seldom admit their mistakes that cost teams he will be strutting his stuff again. All the weasel words will be put trotted out by NZRRA but liitle will be done to sanction the said referee.
