Winger Israel Dagg claimed a hat-trick of tries as Hawke's Bay remained in Air New Zealand Cup play-off contention with a comfortable 45-14 away win at Counties Manukau on Sunday.

The Magpies defeated the Steelers at Pukekohe to return to joint third place in the table, level with resurgent Bay of Plenty.

Former New Zealand Sevens and youth World Cup star Dagg led the way with 22 points after converting two of his tries and adding a penalty.

The hosts remain at the foot of the table after seven rounds, with only one victory - an opening day derby win over champions Auckland.
