Wales are attempting to entice South African-born Ospreys centre-cum-wing Hanno Dirksen to represent the nation in Test rugby.

Dirksen qualifies for Wales through the three-year residency rule, but was not picked for the international trial match ahead of the June Tests in the land of his birth.

The issue facing the Ospreys star is a persistent knee problem, restricting his involvement in training and so affecting his conditioning and match fitness.

"We've had a conversation about Hanno Dirksen," revealed Wales assistant coach Rob Howley to WalesOnline.

"I've said to Steve Tandy we are going to have to sit down and talk about trying to get the best out of Hanno for him to play international rugby.

"What the solution is I'm not too sure. It's very difficult.

"His knee problem has been an issue for 18 months at least. It is a shame, because Hanno is a quality player, but he's just playing game to game. Unfortunately then your conditioning drops off a level. We just cannot man-manage a player on a tour."
