Ruled out: Ross Wardle

Promising Dragons midfielder Ross Wardle is facing a long period on the sidelines after sustaining a serious knee ligament injury.

The 22-year-old centre, the region's top scorer this season, was forced off having picked up the injury during the Dragons' 45-27 loss in Treviso, where he scored his seventh try of the campaign.

"A complete tear of the ACL is the outcome of the scan. Operation next week and then the long road to recovery begins," Tweeted Wardle.

"A big thanks for all the support I've received from the people within and around Dragons rugby."

"The worst case scenario is he will be out until September," Dragons boss Lyn Jones told WalesOnline.

"It's a blow because Ross has had a decent season. He has worked hard, learnt an awful lot and really developed as a professional rugby player. It's sad that he won't be involved for the rest of the season."

The Dragons' midfield injuries are mounting up, with Wardle joining Ashley Smith on the sidelines - Jack Dixon and Pat Leach are likely to maintain their partnership against the Ospreys on "Judgement Day" this weekend, with youngster Tyler Morgan a candidate for a spot on the bench.

Veteran hooker Rhys Thomas and Fijian powerhouse Netani Talei are also set to return.
