Troubled Blues seek Gatland's input

Sought: Warren Gatland

Cardiff Blues have revealed they will consult Wales boss Warren Gatland before appointing Phil Davies' Director of Rugby successor.

Davies stepped down on Monday after his side fell to a 15-10 defeat at PRO12 strugglers Zebre - the second time the Italian minnows have beaten them this season.

While defence coach Dale McIntosh and backs coach Paul John assume the mantle in the meantime, the Blues are hard at work to identify Davies' replacement.

"We'd like Warren to be involved in the process," Blues chief executive Richard Holland told WalesOnline.

"We want him to be involved in drawing up a short-list and be on the appointment panel, along with members of the board.

"We will be looking to find the best available candidate, from wherever that may be in the world.

"We want the best guy to take this region forward and we are very keen to utilise Warren's expertise in the process."

Meanwhile, former Wales wing Adrian Hadley - who played for Cardiff in the 1980s and won a Triple Crown with Wales in 1988 - backed Davies' decision to resign, though admitted his ex-teammate had a difficult job on his hands.

Cardiff Blues currently sit 10th in the PRO12 table, and seem unlikely to qualify for top European involvement next season, whatever the entry format or requirements.

"It's the worst Blues squad I've ever seen," Hadley told the BBC.

"I'm not surprised he's gone. I don't know if it's a case of did he jump before he was pushed?"

"There's a lot of things that go on in a region that you don't always get to hear and obviously the guy at the helm is going to be blamed.

"But he [Davies] has had injuries, they [Cardiff Blues] have lost some decent players and not recruited decent players back into the squad.

"Coaches have left. But at the end of the day it's a results business, they are 10th in the league, never going to qualify for Europe if it's the top six. He's got to go."
