Evans wants disciplined Dragons

Excited: Darren Evans

Discipline will be paramount in beating Cardiff Blues at Rodney Parade on Boxing Day, says Dragons head coach Darren Edwards.

The Dragons have suffered two consecutive away losses, but can go some way towards erasing that pain with a sweet victory over their derby rivals on Thursday.

The pair line up against each other again on New Year's Day in a festive double-header, but Edwards knows his side must improve their discipline.

Going down 14-11 in dramatic circumstances to Connacht in Galway on Saturday saw the Dragons concede a total of 13 penalties, and lose prop Owen Evans to the sin-bin.

While a week earlier, they were blown up on 18 occasions in a hefty 32-13 reverse at Bordeaux-Begles.

"Discipline will be crucial against the Blues because it's the small margins that are so important," Edwards told the South Wales Argus.

"We had a tough time in France. We were really disappointed with our accuracy and the amount of penalties we conceded and the yellow cards meant we had no chance."

With the Blues sweeping the board a year ago in winning both festive encounters, and the Dragons not having overcome their rivals since an 18-14 home victory in March 2012, the match takes on added significance.

Indeed, with only three points separating 8th-placed Dragons and the Blues one spot below them, much is at stake.

"These back-to-back games are so exciting and I can't even get tickets for some of my family because the game at Rodney Parade is a sell-out," added Evans.

"The whole place has come to life and it has been great for us from a commercial point of view and we will be looking to put on a big show."
