Glasgow Warriors have been dealt a blow ahead of the new season with the news that Niko Matawalu has sustained a broken metatarsal.
The scrum-half suffered the injury during a training season and has undergone an operation on the injured foot. The Fijian is expect to be sidelined for a handful of weeks.
"We're naturally disappointed that Niko will miss the start of the season," head coach Gregor Townsend told the club's official website.
"He brings so much to the squad both on and off the pitch and we wish him well in his recovery.
"Chris (Cusiter) is scheduled to return to full training within the next couple of weeks and I've been really pleased with how Ali (Price) has adapted to our training, since he joined us a few weeks ago.
"Along with Henry (Pyrgos), who is coming off the back of an excellent season with Glasgow and Scotland, there will be good competition for the number nine jersey this season."
There is some good news on the injury front, with Mike Cusack, Finlay Gillies, Dougie Hall, Ruaridh Jackson, Pat MacArthur and Duncan Weir all expected to be fit in the early stages of the season. Peter Horne is some way off though after undergoing an ACL reconstruction operation.
