Not so long ago a lot of Leinster supporters were talking up 'their coach' Cheika as the obvious replacement for Kidney. How he had transformed Leinster .... and now the world bla bla. Great job he has made of Stade Français.

So let's not get too excited abot Mr Schmidt.

leinster_goy - I have to say I don't agree with your analysis at all.

Firstly look at the unbearable pressure that comes with the all Blacks job and look at the pressure that comes with the Irish job, given that the useless joke shop Kidney is still in a job and never seems fazed by a loss once it's close. Now look at the salary that comes with the all blacks job from a loss making NZRU, now look at the salary that the IRFU can afford to pay, an organisation that recorded almost 50 Million euro profit last year.

also Schmidt has no international experience and 2 years ago he was an assistance coach for Claremont. I don't think he will be considered for the NZ job for a few more years and probably without international experience. He should cut his teeth at Ireland where he has the players, the resources and the pay cheque, before ultimately taking the prestige of the All Blacks a few years down the line.....assuming he wants that job, I certainly haven't read an interview with him that indicates that he aspires to it, perhaps you are assuming too much yourself pal?!

IRFU politics - Selection is not interfered with and it entirely up to the coach. This is where Schmidt will be superior judging by his track record of making tough and correct calls at Leinster. Once upon a time there was pressure to include Ulster players but when you consider the standard of the Ulster boys now any Ulster selection is rightfully merited.

Provincial Divide - that went out the window in 2009 mate, the 1 good thing that Kidney did.

Inconsistency - This is again down to the coaching, motivating and team selections which are not right under Kidney. Being able to beat the best inconsistently just shows the talent is there but just not being used properly.

Get out of the stone age kid and broaden your mind. WW2 has ended and Ireland is now an independent state.

@DaveJ like all good kiwi coaches, Schmidty aspires to manage the all blacks. it's definitely in his long-term plans and winning the double with leinster (and possibly even more success to follow) is going to make his fellow kiwis back home sit up and take notice - if they haven't done so already

the logical thing for Joe to do is stay at leinster, buff up his cv even more and then when his work is done, go back home and coach a super rugby side - the crusaders would be perfect for Schmidty. if not that, then coaching the blues would make sense, since he started off in that region. a super rugby title or two, and then the all blacks is the ultimate prize

my central point is that taking the ireland job would be a disaster for Schmidt. why? because he would be wading into a sea of S, star, star, T: the ever-present politics of selection (affirmative action for ulstermen, etc), dealing with the inept IRFU, the deeply ingrained leinster-munster rivalry, the age-old irish inferiority complex which no coach will ever be able to eradicate, the infuriating inconsistency (beating france/australia/south africa one week then next week struggling against the likes of namibia/usa)...if Schmidty has any sense, he will stay away from all of that. it will be a blot on his career, ruining his ultimate goal and possibly even reducing him to a laughing stock like o'sullivan became and like piss-filter is increasingly becoming

Leinster do want Fitzgerald, they just don't want to pay. The two just have differing opinions on Fitzgerald's worth.

Personally, I really want him there. Home grown, accomplished so much already, he's versatile and he is only 24.

If he was looking at going for a international job, why wouldnt he want the AB job! But to qualify for it he needs to be coaching in new zealand. One more year with us and he'll prob move south and be aiming for AB job after RWC2015.

but leinster_goy, if Schmidt wins another H-Cup and the Pro 12 what is there left to desire at club level? Nothing! International level would be the next challenge. He will go to the national side eventually, hopefully as head coach to replace that useless spud Declan Kidney.

great news. still no news on Fitzy though, which is worrying

these extensions and signings bode extremely well for the future of the province. however, i worry that leinster might become victims of their own success - if/when we complete the double this year, it is going to create irresistible pressure to give Schmidty the national team job next year. at the end of the day, he has his own career to think about and if the IRFU come to him with a big money offer after the 2013 6N, can he really refuse? doubtful

personally i think Joe would be making a disastrous decision in taking the ireland job (the reasons are obvious). he should stay at leinster for the foreseeable future and continue the process of building something very special
