Waratahs captain Dave Dennis has targeted a return for the start of the 2015 Super Rugby season as he recovers from a serious knee injury.

In June the versatile second or back-row forward was ruled out of the end of the Waratahs' triumphant Super Rugby campaign, having to support from the sidelines as Michael Hooper led the franchise to their first title in a nail-biting 33-32 victory over the Crusaders last weekend.

Now Michael Cheika's side have already set their sights on becoming the first Australian side to win the competition back-to-back, and Dennis is confident he'll be ready to go when the season gets back underway.

"I think round one is a realistic goal for me," Dennis told AAP.

"That's probably what I'm looking at and just assess it as we go. It's all on track for it at the moment. I'm only four weeks post-surgery and I saw the surgeon on Friday.

"He was happy so it's all looking good. I've just got to work hard over the next six months and hopefully get right for round one.

"It was a weird sensation to be honest [watching the final]. Of course, extremely proud. I've been at the club for seven or eight years now, and I've seen a lot of guys work hard and never be able to achieve that and I'm just really happy for everyone involved."
