Waratahs scrum-half Nick Phipps has praised the impact defence coach Nathan Grey and former Crusader Daryl Gibson have had in Sydney.

Along with boss Michael Cheika and kicking coach Andrew Mehrtens, Grey and Gibson have been playing a big role in turning things around.

Phipps admits it has been the case and singled out former Wallaby centre Grey for the rugged defence he has instilled throughout the group.

"He's brought a hard steel," he told sportal.co.nz.

"I guess we all grew up watching Greysie play footy when we were younger.

"We know he's got that absolutely uncompromising style of rugby and we love that. It really filters off on to the rest of the players.

"Him and Daryl Gibson have been amazing supporting Michael Cheika.

"The work they do day-in, day-out is something that we reflect at the end of this campaign, they should get a big credit for it."

Former Crusaders centre Gibson could well be the Waratahs' ace in the hole this week though ahead of the Super Rugby final, with Phipps backing him to have an impact.

"He's our mole. He's very good. He knows the New Zealand teams inside and out. He'll have a lot of detail. He's been there, done that," he said.

"He'll be having a lot to say during the week. It's good for us, we're able to have that inside knowledge.

"We'll know what style of play they're going to play and how to counter it."
