Peter Grant: Adds versatility

Stormers fly-half Peter Grant is set to join the Cape Town-based outfit on their tour to Australia and New Zealand.

The 29-year-old will hook up with the side in either the first or second week of their overseas trip, straight after completing his club commitments with Kobelco Steelers in Japan.

The Stormers face the Crusaders in Christchurch in their first tour match on March 8 before travelling to Hamilton where they take on the Chiefs the following weekend.

Their next match is in Canberra against the Brumbies on March 22 before they finish their trip in Brisbane against the Reds on March 29

Grant has benefited from the Steelers' rotation policy as there are limits on the number of foreign players during matches in Japan.

The Steelers' progress in Japan's national knockout competition has, however, delayed his return to the Stormers but the wait will be over soon for Coetzee.

"He's playing this weekend again; they were actually lucky to have won last weekend by a couple of points ... this is the last weekend ahead of the final and they apparently have very tough opponents, which could (end their season)," Coetzee told Sport24 .

"So it's a maximum of two more weeks, but they may fall out this week."

"Our intention is for him to join us on tour, straight from Japan. There won't be major time-zone issues, and it will be a relatively short flight for him to link up with us."

Coetzee said Grant would boost the squad, not only for his ability as a fly-half but also because of his versatility. He is also able to play at inside centre and the Stormers do not have much depth in their midfield at the moment.

"He can also help ease load the load on Jean (de Villiers) in terms of decision-making in the backline as a whole; we have some brilliant youngsters around, but obviously at this level communication is a massive aspect - he's got that ability to organise people around him, to talk," added Coetzee.

"At fly-half, I love having all of Demetri (Catrakalis), Kurt (Coleman) and Gary (van Aswegen) with us but at times when the pressure's on things can go a bit quiet; you need that direction someone of Peter's experience can give.

"Bash is hungry to play some Super Rugby again; he's quite fresh because of the limitation on the internationals at Japanese clubs and the way they rotate them."
