Crusaders and New Zealand fly-half Colin Slade has expressed his delight at returning to Christchurch for next season.

Slade has been named on the bench for Saturday's ITM Cup Final for Canterbury against Wellington, but will play a major role for the Crusaders next season as regular fly-half Dan Carter takes a break from the game.

Having started his career in Christchurch, Slade spent two seasons with the Highlanders after moving in 2011.

Whilst he tasted fewer successes in Dunedin, the 26-year-old All Black believes his best rugby has come playing for the Crusaders, with that factor playing a large role in his decision to return home.

"When I left I was only going down there (to the Highlanders) for a year or two and ended up staying for three," Slade told Fairfax NZ News.

"It was always my intention to come home, I love Christchurch. But I'm not just here for next year - I am wanting to stay as long as I am being picked and playing well.

"I really liked Dunedin and enjoyed my time down there.

"It was a really tough year (2012). It wasn't an easy decision but ultimately it was where I thought I would play my best rugby and under these coaches (at the Crusaders), I suppose, I have done it in the past."
