Bowing out: George Smith

Brumbies boss Jake White described veteran flanker George Smith as "phenomenal" after the Australian side lost the Super Rugby Final.

Smith returned to the Brumbies from Japan after an early-season injury to star Wallaby international David Pocock, impressing enough to be included in the Australian side that faced the British and Irish Lions last month.

Bowing out following this year's Super Rugby Final, Smith put in an outstanding performance in Hamilton against the Chiefs, only to sadly end up on the losing side.

"He's phenomenal. It wasn't the way we wanted to say goodbye to him, we wanted to give him the trophy," said White.

"He epitomises what Brumbies rugby is all about. He wants to be a Brumbie. He's played for the Brumbies.

"He came back and wanted to add value and we are obviously very grateful for the contributions he has made."

Smith, who has 111 caps for Australia, described the experience of returning to play for his old club as "amazing".

"It's been amazing. I've absolutely loved every moment playing with the Brumbies and the one-off chance to play with the Wallabies," said Smith.

"I've always regarded the Brumbies as family. I felt at home when I did arrive back and I'm very grateful for the Brumbies fans and the Brumbies organisation for welcoming me. I've had a great time."
