Wiehahn Herbst: Impressed against Chiefs

Sharks prop Jannie du Plessis has hailed the performance of fellow front-rower Wiehahn Herbst in last weekend's loss to the Chiefs.

Herbst, who usually plays at tighthead, was on the other side of the scrum against the Chiefs and was one of the Durban-based franchise's standout performers in Hamilton.

The 24-year-old started in his new position after Springbok loosehead prop Beast Mtawarira sustained a calf injury in the Sharks defeat against the Cheetahs.

And Du Plessis, who is the Springboks' first-choice tighthead, believes Herbst did an excellent job as Mtawarira's replacement.

"I don't know if people realise how well Wiehahn Herbst played at loosehead, it's not easy to go and play on the other side of the scrum, but he's very strong and shorter than others he plays against, but I don't think people know how well he is playing," he told the Sharks' official website.

"He deserves credit and like the whole pack, was brilliant; everyone scrummed, everyone pulled their weight.

"The front row does one job at the scrums, but scrumming comes from all eight guys. Everyone wanted to play well and I won't say we wanted to play with desperation, but there was real intent. The whole pack played well on the weekend."

The Sharks are on a three-match losing streak - after losses to the Chiefs, Cheetahs and Stormers - but Du Plessis believes they can return to their winning ways against the winless Highlanders in Dunedin this weekend.

"Unfortunately we didn't play well enough to win and that's the biggest lesson we should learn: to make sure we play accurately enough that we use the opportunities we have to win the game," he added.
