Force: Too strong in Brisbane

The Western Force captured their first win of the Super Rugby season after upsetting the Reds 19-12 in Brisbane on Saturday.
Against all odds, the men from the west kept the Queenslanders scoreless in the second half and tryless for the duration of the match as they bagged their first ever victory at Suncorp Stadium.
It wasn't pretty, but the Force won't care. A win is a win, and moves them up to 11th place above the Waratahs and the Rebels.
The only try of the match came through Force winger Alfi Mafi in the 32nd minute of the match, while South African import fly-half Sias Ebersohn kicked five from six goals in a strong performance for the Perth-based franchise.
They were the underdogs but deserved their win - being hungrier in defence and more accurate in attack than the Reds, who were shut out by resolute defence in the second half.
The Force took the early lead thanks to Ebersohn's opening three-pointer and the Reds were fortunate not to have conceded a try to Chris Alcock after Quade Cooper's clearance kick was charged down.
After missing his first attempt at goal, Cooper made amends with three successful kicks at goal in between another Ebersohn penalty to put his team in front (9-6).
The visitors, however, went back in front in the 32nd minute when influential scrum-half Alby Mathewson broke from a line-out, brushing off Saia Faingaa on the way, before putting Mafi over in the left corner.
Ebersohn converted, but the Reds had the final say in the first half when Cooper closed to the gap on the stroke of half-time. It would be the last time the Queenslanders would score as they went into the break one point adrift of the Force (12-13).
The second half proved just as dire as the first. Mathewson almost set up a try to Junior Rasolea but his kick ahead was spilled by the winger over the try-line.
Luckily though for the Force, Ebersohn raised the flags two more times to give his team some breathing space and it meant the Reds had to score twice to win.
After holding the Force out after 16 phases, the Reds had the chance to draw the match in the 73rd minute however their efforts came up without the points when Reds hooker James Hanson was held up over the line.

Well done Force. Deserved win. It was good to see Genia getting a run but Cooper is a liability. Dont the Reds have an alternative 10?

I was kind of hoping Sharpie would've been doing the interviews! The amount of times he stood there in a Force jersey, miserable, yet again so close but so far... I'm sure he would've struggled to hide his biased joy!
Well done Force. Terrible game of rugby, but well done on the win. Very good kicking by Sias - good to see. But Force, you can do better than this !
I also really enjoyed the fact that the Reds coach is now looking like the loser he is. After hardly ever winning a game with the Force, even though he had some very talented players at his disposal, he ditched them to go to the former champions... only to have his new team beaten on their home ground, for the first time, by his former team - minus the big stars. Priceless.

too early for the table to have any significance, 11th place means?
Today was Reds' 5th match so a potential 25pts available to them, others eg Crusaders had only their 3rd match this weekend, plus one bye so a potential 19pts - not a valid comparison yet.

Tryless Reds! Hmm whats happening there? Wonder what Trinuts has to say after that lacklustre performance? Very very average. Once again kept tryless by another average OZ team. Better shape up against the Bulls next week or they might be facing another walloping by the men from Pretoria. What was last year's scoreline again? Trinuts, your the statistician I remember it was large so can you look in your results book and tell us the score last year?

As I said in the preview this would be a tough game for the Force against the Reds rabble but I was surprised how close the Reds managed to keep the final score so all credit to them. Lets face it the Force are really a pretty good 2nd Division NZ NPC team (looking at the team sheet that is) so it should come as no surprise that they can play a little bit. At this stage it looks like the 2nd Oz team in the conference could come from even a lower position than in 2012. All in all after the Crusaders/Bulls game this match was just riveting and I was really happy that I did not wash my hair and took in the whole 80 or so mins.

What the hell is going on with Aussie rugby. Well done Force, that was pathetic from the Reds even for a New South Welshman they were disappointing.

huge win for the Force, Fortress Suncorp has been difficult for any team, let alone one written-off as easybeats. Genia's '40 minutes of fury' was a fizzer, a 40 min liability, at least he lasted the distance in his comeback but so very out-played by Mathewson who must have been man of the match of they have one? Losing your 'easy' home games can be a disaster in the conference system, expect there'll e a few quite cheers coming from the Brumbies camp after this result.
Top marks Force, did what so many teams have failed to do, win at Suncorp, and second game this season Reds go try-less.
Didn't see any Reds players enhancing their Qantas Wallabies prospects.
Except for Quade, he's a star and must be a first-choice pick. The commentator said Quade can think of four or five things at a time, sadly one of them wasn't rugby as he had that kick charged down. He's the man!
