The Highlanders have signed Tasman lock Joe Wheeler on a two-year contract.
Wheeler's played four games for the Crusaders since debuting in 2010, but has lived in the shadow of Brad Thorn, Sam Whitelock and Luke Romano. The 23-year-old now has the chance to establish himself at the next level after joining the Dunedin-based franchise.
Although he has 41 provincial caps with Tasman, Wheeler has struggled with shoulder and back injuries which have hampered his chances of becoming a Super Rugby regular.
"Joe is a well-rounded player and he will fit well into the culture we have created at the Highlanders," coach Jamie Joseph said.
"Also his ability to play as a loose forward gives us additional options in the forward pack."
