How does a 5'11' prop who was firmly planted on the ground hit a 6'5'' back rower directly in the head with his shoulder.....if the taller player wasn't bending down into the tackle?? Was it really that high a hit? It looked pretty good to me. Perhaps it was Kankowski's 70's porno perm ripping back that made it look worse than it really was....

As for the shoulder charges...fair cop....but neither were malicious, unlike some of Bakkies and co's "tackles" over the years.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vb2eUvpBJEs I'm not so sure re a ban, watch the video, while BT has him lined up, Kankowski is tackled/dragged down by Chiefs 5. Leave it to the experts.

I think that red threshold would mean that you would have to consider it first. A yellow would have been appropriate. Sharks would never have won that, their best man was Jordaan, who did not feature in previous games. This speaks volumes.

Did it really come close to red card threshold??? What utter bollocks!! Foul yes, yellow card wouldn't have been out of place, but anyone who thought that could have resulted in a red card needs to take up a different sport - like table tennis!

First impact was around the chest and ball and it slipped up, that was why the player was not hurt at all despite how it looked. Still should have been a penalty. Should be much. eg Andy Powell clothes lined Richie McCaw directly to the head and it got nothing

You see, there is a problem with the laws of rugby as they apply to red cards.

Under the current laws Ben should have been sent off at the 47th minute as, per the Citing Commissioner, the tackle "met the threshold of red card". If Ben had been sent off the Chiefs would have been down to 14 men against the Sharks 15. The Sharks would have been back in the game. Therefore the fact that he wasn't sent off was very unfair to the Sharks under the present laws. Ben wasn't even penalised.

But who would have wanted Ben sent off. That would have been a punishment far greater than the crime deserved.

So the laws need to be changed. The following could be put in place which is much fairer, using Ben's tackle as an example;

The TMO can contact the referee and tell him about the tackle.

Ben gets penalised.

Ben gets a red card.

After 10 minutes another prop comes on in replacement of Ben

Ben gets the appropriate suspension later.

That is, a red card gets the player sent off but he gets replaced by another after 10 minutes. That way the match is not destroyed which too often happens after a red card. Who remembers the Welsh captain at the RWC?.

He is very young and gets a bit excited. He has had an amazing first season though with no other citing so he might get a week or two max or just a warning.
