Newcastle's pitch can bring success

Ambitious: Gonzalo Tiesi

With the installation of a new artificial surface the days of a heavy pitch for Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park are gone.

And, while the cold and wet winter days might never disappear, Argentina centre Gonzalo Tiesi believes Newcastle Falcons can finally start to show what they are capable of.

Newcastle, who host Group D of the Premiership Rugby 7s series at Darlington Northern Echo Arena on August 2, found themselves fighting a relegation battle last season.

However, Tiesi is sure that with a consistent surface to play on, The Falcons can start to play a more expansive brand of rugby.

Tiesi joined Newcastle last November in a move that saw him team join up again with director of rugby Dean Richards - who signed the Argentine during his time at Harlequins.

And Tiesi is enjoying being reunited with Richards in the North East and is excited to be part of a team that has aspirations to improve on last year's performances.

"I think the squad is really coming together and we are feeling really good ahead of the season," said Tiesi.

"We think that we have the ability to climb up the table and feel like we are on the right track.

"Obviously it was a hard season last time but we think we are in a better place this year.

"We know we can perform better and we are looking to play a different way and be more expansive.

"I think the new 3G pitch is really going to help with that because last year we wanted to play a certain way and the pitch didn't allow it - although the weather will still be the same!

"We're really happy with how pre-season is going and for me it's great because I didn't have this last season."
