Former South Africa second row Alistair Hargreaves has been appointed as Saracens captain ahead of the new season.

The Springbok lock forward, 28, succeeds Steve Borthwick, who retired at the end of last season.

"Alistair has shown exceptional leadership qualities since arriving at the club in 2012, and is ideally qualified to be our new captain," said Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall.

"He is unequivocally respected by staff and players alike, and we feel certain he will lead the squad brilliantly, on and off the field."

"The captaincy is a fantastic honour, and I am looking forward to the responsibility," said Hargreaves.

Saracens reached the Premiership and Heineken Cup Finals last season, losing both contests.

Hargreaves won four caps for South Africa between 2010-2011.
