Dismissed: Sila Puafisi

Gloucester boss Nigel Davies defended the decision to not bring on prop Dan Murphy and switch to uncontested scrums against Bath.

Murphy had previously worked with Bath coaches Toby Booth and Neil Hatley at London Irish, with Booth suggesting that Murphy would have been capable of covering the other side of the scrum.

The void was created following a red card to Sila Puafisi, who had earlier replaced starting tighthead Shaun Knight.

Davies however felt that playing Murphy on the opposite side of the scrum would have been 'absolute madness and dangerous'.

"[Murphy] has not played tighthead for us. The game has moved on. He has been with us for three years. He is not trained to play tighthead," said Davies.

"It would be absolute madness and dangerous, and they (Bath) should know that. It is a very technical position, tighthead, the most difficult position, probably, on the rugby field to play.

"You can't throw somebody into that environment. It would be completely unacceptable and dangerous."

Davies tried to pin the insane levels of ill-discipline on the field at the feet of referee Tim Wigglesworth.

"I think right from the start of the game the lack of consistency shown really frustrated a lot of players from both sides," added Davies.

"When it is not managed and there is no consistency, you are going to get frustration.

"The players work very hard to put stuff together and be the best that they can be, and when there is a lack of consistency it is very difficult."
