French scrum-half David Mélé has signed a new contract extension with Leicester Tigers to remain at Welford Road.

Mélé has impressed in his first season with the club and will not stay beyond the end of next season, according to the Leicester Mercury.

The 28-year-old joined from Perpignan this season and has made an instant impact, even captaining the side in the LV= Cup.

"David had another year left on his contract but he loves it so much here that he wanted some security and we wanted to know he was there for us as well," Leicester boss Richard Cockerill told the Leicester Mercury.

"Scrum-half is a very important position for us and David has done really well since arriving.

"We are always going to be missing Ben Youngs for large parts of the season with England, so David is important to us.

"Sam Harrison is another big part of our plans in that position and, hopefully, his injury problems are behind him this season."

England Saxons players Jordan Crane and Adam Thompstone have also signed new contracts with the club, while the Leicester Mercury are also reporting that Miles Benjamin has agreed a new deal after impressing since his return from a major neck injury.

"All three players [Mélé, Crane and Thompstone] have done well for us and we like to keep the continuity at the club if we can - as well as rewarding those players who have done well for us," added Cockerill.

"All of those guys wanted to stay and we like to reward players who are keen to remain at the club.

"The first things those guys said when they came in to talk to us is that they enjoy it here and wanted to keep playing for Leicester.

"That was their opening line and that is always good to hear. This squad won the title last season and we are keen to keep that squad together the best we can."
