Ryan has hope for winless Worcester

Despite spending the first half hour of their loss to Saracens "sightseeing", Dean Ryan thinks Worcester can compete with the best.

Worcester were all but out of the 26-8 loss to Saracens following the visitors' four-try salvo early on at Sixways.

They did respond with a try of their own from Argentina international number eight Leonardo Senatore, but the outlook is bleak for Ryan's side.

Worcester will enter 2014 without a win in the Aviva Premiership this season and at the bottom of the league, nine points adrift of London Irish who play on Sunday.

Despite the deficit however, Ryan stated that there had been a marked improvement between Worcester's position now compared to two months ago.

"We paid the penalty for probably spending half an hour sightseeing and, after 20 or 30 minutes, we decided to get involved in the game and were a very good team," said Ryan.

"I think it is real credit to us because they are a really good side with some good players.

"It just showed against Leicester last week that, if they get a start, they can do a lot of damage. I was really pleased with our response.

"There is an element where you sit and watch and wait and you just cannot do that with a team that has pace and power as they have got. We showed in the second half we can take things to them.

"We recognise we have some massive challenges in the new year but we are in a very different place than where we were six or seven weeks ago."
