Powell playing for Sale future

Andy Powell Sale Bath v Sale Aviva Premiership 2012

Out of contract: Andy Powell

Sale Sharks and Wales number eight Andy Powell is eager to stay with the Premiership side, but is yet to receive a contract offer.

Powell was handed a rare start in the LV=Cup semi-final on Sunday, which saw Sale progress to reach the final of the competition this weekend against Harlequins.

Having joined from London Wasps in 2011, Powell has 23 caps for Wales and was part of the 2009 Lions tour to South Africa.

"I'm out of contract at the end of this year and I've had no offers anywhere yet so I had to play well on Sunday," said Powell to the Manchester Evening News.

"In terms of the future, I would love to stay here at Sale as I'm happy here, but it's been a tough season so Sunday was a big opportunity to hopefully show what I'm about.

"It's been stop-start for me this season. I've had a few little niggles along the way and, in fairness to Richie Vernon, he's played really well and kept me out of the side and I take my hat off to him as he's a good player.

"But I was given a chance starting at number eight on Sunday and it went well, but a lot of the praise needs to go to the boys up front as the front five were superb and without that platform I wouldn't have been able to pick off the scrum and go forward.

"After last week when we had a bit of a battering down at Leicester, we had a hard week's training and everyone realised we could get to a final if we beat Saracens.

"We're a good side but at times I think we have been our own worst enemies and on Sunday we played rugby in the right areas and it was a great team effort.

"We knew Saracens would come up with a good team but, equally, we knew we were good enough to beat them on the day."

Theres no difference, both have done repeated misdemeanour's and both have been given chance after chance, Powell did the golf buggy thing, then he was kicked out of wasps for starting a brawl with football fans where he got royally beaten up and now he's on his 3rd chance at sale where he cant get into the first team, so he has no offers from other clubs. Gavin Henson has got a worse copy book and has been given more chances but thats purely because he is a better player than powell in a more valued position. There are alot of good Number's 6/8's about but a goal kicking 10/12 with hensons ability (on his day) will always be wanted somewhere, because of that clubs will always look past his personality issues.

The guy takes one drunken drive in a golf cart and is shunned for the rest of his career. Yet Gavin Henson can repeatedly get drunk and smack his team mates around causing injury to them as well as himself and get chance after chance. What's the difference? They're both Lions. They've both won Grand Slams for Wales. At least Powell isn't a prima donna. He needs to get back to a Welsh club team for a fresh start.

I love Andy Powell, but he wasn't meant for the professional era of rugby.
