Cueto blames players for poor start

Taking the blame: Mark Cueto

Sale Sharks wing Mark Cueto believes the club's players must take the blame for their poor start to the Premiership season.

The Sharks are at the bottom of the standings after Friday's 29-19 home defeat to London Welsh, which was their fourth loss in as many matches.

"It's just a massive disappointment and we've got to question ourselves," Cueto told the BBC.

"It's about going out there and doing what you're supposed to do and we're clearly not doing that."

The 32-year-old believes Sale's players currently lack the hunger to succeed.

"It's not about tactics or game-plans or anything like that," Cueto explained.

"It's just old school, about who wants it more, and they (London Welsh) just seemed to outmuscle us.

"Even giving away the bonus point at the end, it shouldn't come to that, but it's just simple things like understanding the game and how to play the game. We're just nowhere near."

There was plenty of excitement amongst Sale supporters at the start of the season after the appointment of director of rugby Bryan Redpath, the recruitment international players such as Richie Gray and Danny Cipriani and the club's move to the Salford City Stadium.

But after defeats to Exeter, Saracens, Harlequins and Premiership debutants London Welsh the Sharks have only one point on the table.

"We talked over the summer about how promising this season is going to be and we couldn't have got off to a worse start," added Cueto.

"We're massively appreciate the support of the fans and we'll do everything we can to turn it around."
