Leinster into the final

Rob Kearney Cian Healy Leinster Heineken Cup semi-final v Clermont

Turning point: Rob Kearney breaks clear to set up Cian Healy

Leinster are still on track to defend their Heineken Cup title after beating Clermont 19-15 in Sunday's semi-final in Bordeaux.

Leinster will now face Ulster in an all-Irish final at Twickenham on Saturday, 19 May - the team from Dublin's third final in four years.

The match was billed as the 'game of the season' in Europe and the capacity crowd at the 34 500-seater Stade Chaban-Delmas were certainly treated to a tussle of the highest quality.

Clermont led 12-6 at the interval of a cut-and-thrust encounter but Leinster ruled in the second period and took control thanks to a try set up by Rob Kearney and scored by Cian Healy.

The French side looked to have snatched victory in the dying moments however but Wesley Fofana lost control of the ball in the act of crossing the try-line.

The game ended with les Jaunards camped under the posts but referee Wayne Barnes handed a decisive penalty to Leinster, much to the displeasure of the booing French fans, who felt that the Englishman already owed them two yellow cards.

Glorious sunshine had replaced the rain of the earlier in the day and Jonathan Sexton put Leinster on the board first from the kicking tee. But his effort was cancelled out by a penalty from opposite number Brock James to leave matters all-square at the end of the first quarter.

Leinster skipper Leo Cullen was lucky not to see yellow after landing a punch on Lionel Faure. If anything referee Barnes's decision to let Cullen off the hook was probably influenced more by theatrical manner in which the loosehead went to ground rather than the weak punch itself.

Clermont enjoyed a strong 15 minutes but their only reward was another penalty from James to which Sexton replied three minutes later.

But the French side were slowly but surely beginning to control the tempo of the game and were enjoying the lion's share of field position. Clermont finished the half the stronger of the two teams and two more penalties gave l'ASM a deserved six-point lead at the break.

Europe's defending champions started the second period in perfect fashion however as Kearney burst through a gap in the inside channel from Richardt Strauss's clever pass to set up a try for Healy.

Sexton's conversion put Leinster one point ahead before Kearney stunned Clermont when he slotted a long-range drop goal!

Almost immediately James had a chance to cut the lead to a single point but pushed his penalty attempt wide to awaken the ghosts of that fateful day in Dublin two years ago. The Australian didn't waver with his next kick though, leaving the scores at 16-15.

Sexton held his nerve to split the uprights from out wide going into the final quarter to restore the four-point gap as Leinster plied the pressure.

The closing stages were filled with drama and the TMO was called upon when Sexton sent a penalty attempt directly over the top of the outside upright. Leinster were denied the three points, setting up a grandstand finish as Clermont went in search of what would surely be a winning try.

Fofana and Clermont celebrated what they considered a five-pointer, but the video referee correctly ruled against them.

With just seconds left, Leinster survived a monumental final assault to advance to Twickenham after an epic battle.

Man of the match: The best full-back in Europe at the moment, Rob Kearney didn't put a foot wrong and produced a seven-minute spell that changed the complexion of the game.

Moment of the match: In an extraordinary finale, Fofana thought he had scored two minutes from time as he twisted out of Gordon D'Arcy's tackle, but as he landed on his elbow he lost his grip on the ball, which squirmed out of his hands as he tried to ground it.

@crunchfit - sorry - you let yourself down!. Think about it - if you can. Embrassing if you reply. Bye!

Haha, nah you didn't! You would have responded accordingly in one of your comments... No worries though.

Same to you! All the best.

@crunchfit - I have and you are talking rubbish. You are right, I am a smart chap. Please can we stop this discussion, as you can't evidence anything and your claims of me being biased are bonkers. I trust you will not respond and prove you have are a decent chap. The end. Have a good day.

It's all there. You seem like a smart enough chap, I don't think you don't need me to point it out. Just read over the comments!

@crunchfit - now you aren't making sense - have a think about it. Don't forget to provide evidence if you are going to argue, as I have done, and as you refuse to provide. Best call it a day mate as this is starting to get silly.

Haha, no man. Just take it slow and check it again.

@crunchfit - humour eludes you - have a think about it. Thanks for providing no evidence (again) in support of your stance. You can't help being biased I guess. Game set and match to me (the unbiased of the two) I believe. All the best.

I think you're misinterpreting what I say. Take some time to read over, bud. It'll click.

2 - 3 minute shoulder charge? Nah. Use your head mate and think about it. You're a smart lad.

All the best.

@crunchfit - I've just realised you're suggesting that a shoulder charge lasted for 2-3 minutes. Wow, that must have been a vicious assault - hysterical!!! You should become a comedian - or perhaps a punch and judy puppeteer! Very, very funny.

makemehappy says...

@crunchfit - you may be glad if you had, but again you have no evidence of doing so. I note you haven't pointed out any citings, so perhaps there wasn't much to look at??? No idea where the U-turn was - straight as a dye!

80 - 81 minutes and 40 - 42 minutes, buddy!

I like your logic though. That's a bit of a U-turn on what you were saying before. Glad to see I could change your mind.

@crunchfit - what a load of cobblers. How would an Ospreys support go supporting the froggies? Actually my grandad was Irish, so if I was to support another country (or a team from a country is would be Ireland).

Are you saying that not giving yellow cards or a penalty helped Clermont. I think you are the one who must be biased!

I note that you provide no argument for not issuing some yellow cards. As for the head butt - sorry I didn't see it. Neither did the citing commisioner as far as I'm aware, so did that incident happen? Shoulder charge on Boss? Sorry missed that too. As did the citing commisioner, I believe. Did that incident happen? Am I spotting a pattern here? Someone who is biased and is trying to deflect this? I think you know the answer.

So am I biased? No, and you have no evidence of this either.

@makemehappy

Sorry missed that last comment. Maybe you are neutral. I don't know. It certainly doesn't seem this way. For example, I have seen you a number of times complaining about a Leinster win where only Leinster seem to be at fault / lucky in your opinion. Also, on this occasion, you had issue with Barnes not giving Leinster cards and failure to award Clermont a penalty at the end and say that he won the match for Leinster. This particularly really makes me question your neutrality. Firstly, you say that Cullen's strike was a yellow. It was. But why did you not mention the very obvious and much, much worse offense by the Clermont player who charged and struck Cullen with his head, whilst he was in a vulnerable position and then went on to put his hand and arms all over his eyes / face. It was also during the pinnacle of the match - not easy to miss. You didn't even mention this. You didn't mention Cudmore shoulder charging Isaac Boss off the ball either. This was a yellow card offense also.

I don't mind if you're neutral or not but be accurate. I'm just saying, don't say you are entirely neutral when it is plain to see that you aren't.

I am stunned at this whinging by makemehappy.

Watch the match again.Clermont did not deserve to get through that match with the amount of off the ball tackling and offensive blocking and punching and head-butting. This was so consistent throughout the match it could only have been a pre-planned tactic.

eg Cudmore ACTUAL PUNCH in the face on Darcy completely unprovoked AND taking out Boss off the ball just before the Leinster try.

From watching the match in it's entirety again suggesting that Leinster slowed the ball down more than Clermont is just obvious bias. Go troll somewhere else.

@rosbif : "Disgusted by Barnes. Fwd passes, hands in ruck, in from side, not releasing tackled player, wheeling scrums, playing men in the air at lineout, punches, crossing, weird advantages being played or not played, etc etc..... What a clown. I guess we were naive to expect any better!!"

too true.

a terribly bad joke in poor taste. barnes was a disgrace and leinster were allowed to get away with murder at the breakdown. yes, he missed offences on the other side but in the balance leinster did not deserve to win this game. i'm no clermont fa but this was embarassing. discredits the competition.

@crunchfit - I'm pleased to say I'm entirely neutral, so there's at least one around. I couldn't have cared less who won - until the end of the game, when I knew Barnes had ensured it wasn't the right team who had won.

So at least I'm not biased when reviewing the game. Just a minor point, in light of the confusing comments.

It is a review of the game. What else would it be though?

Time to move on I think. All the best.

@crunchfit. good point re cullen. i'm sure you're right. that stuff goes on a lot.

taking a step back, it seems noteworthy that adamk, curates_egg and myself (who were at the ground) seem to have had a totally different experience than some who watched on tv. I guess the human eye and ear are able to scan all available information and pick out the significant points. with tv, one relies on the camerman and the commentator to create a version of events. sadly, too many close-ups and replays, when combined with tv "experts" explaining the rules or interpretations of the ref, possibly distort the mind.

I haven't seen a tape of the game. My recollection is of an unexpectedly nice day weather-wise, lots of colour and pageantry in many hours of build-up, tremendous noise in the stadium, 30 heroes on the pitch, incredibly tense final moments, and a long enjoyable evening. In other words, the game itself was only a small part of the overall experience, and after a few glasses of wine, the key moments were distilled down to a wonder drop goal, a well-taken try, and a missed grounding of the ball. No-one really talked about yellow cards, players diving, punching, cheating, the ref, etc. (although some were keen to talk about the kick that went straight over a post!!).

In short, all that stuff doesnt seem to matter when you're there. But it seems to be all that matters when we're on our laptops back at home!! Quel dommage mes amis :)
