Heineken Cup: Team of Round 6

Gloucester Jonny May try

Great game: Jonny May

Now that the dust has settled across Europe, Planet Rugby thought it was only right to hand out some praise to the stars of Heineken Cup, Round 6.

Some cracking games thrilled spectators over the weekend as Connacht and Gloucester started things off before Bath, Leinster, Leicester Tigers, Munster, Clermont and Castres also won. Sunday ended with key results going the way of Biarritz, Saracens, Edinburgh and Cardiff Blues as the last-eight was confirmed. Ties will be played over the weekend of 5, 6 and 7 April. We can't wait.

So without further ado, here comes our offering - be sure to send in your own 15-1 team line-ups.

Team of Round 6

15 Jonny May (Gloucester) - Arguably a hard call on Leinster full-back Rob Kearney and Cardiff Blues equivalent Leigh Halfpenny, with the duo contributing greatly to their side's victories over the weekend. But for his two-try effort that stunned Toulouse, May is our man.

14 Takudzwa Ngwenya (Biarritz) - Charlie Sharples impressed again at a good time for him personally with the Six Nations fast approaching. Meanwhile, Sitiveni Sivivatu was back to his best as he glided past defenders. However, how can we ignore a hat-trick from the Eagle himself? Ngwenya was electric as Biarritz found their Heineken Cup form - at last.

13 Matt Scott (Edinburgh) - Aurélien Rougerie cut Ulster to pieces in combination with right wing Sivivatu early on at Stade Marcel Michelen while Keith Earls was also good in patches for Munster. But we go for Scott, who was shifted out one spot before kick-off and went on to have one of his better games, almost scoring from the impressive Greig Laidlaw's fine chip.

12 Fabrice Estebanez (Racing-Metro) - Man-of-the-match in their loss in Cardiff, Estebanez sent a message to France head coach Philippe Saint-André that he should not be forgotten. Maxime Mermoz, Aurélien Rougerie, Yann David and Wesley Fofana must stay on their toes.

11 Simon Zebo (Munster) - Aforementioned centre Scott starred alongside soon-to-be Scotland international Tim Visser at Murrayfield, who is going to be key for Edinburgh when they face Toulouse in April. But three scintillating tries meant it was always going to be Zebo.

10 Ronan O'Gara (Munster) - From one new Munster star to their oldest. At 34, O'Gara yet again rolled back the years as he kicked and directed Munster to the knockouts as top seeds. It was high fives all round when ROG was withdrawn late on as his love for the Heineken Cup continues to go both ways. A mention for Connacht fly-half Niall O'Connor.

9 Dimitri Yachvili (Biarritz) - They truly are a different team when he is on the field aren't they? Yachvili was at his mercurial best, directing traffic and kicking for fun as they made the Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-finals. Morgan Parra and Lloyd Williams deserve mentions.

8 Robert Barbieri (Treviso) - The toughest of our weekend calls came at eight as Netani Talei, Ben Skirving and Chris Masoe all put in man-of-the-match performances for their sides. Add to that James Coughlin's effort and we had a nice headache that was soon eased by Barbieri's showing against Sarries. A top shift against the English champions.

7 Thierry Dusautoir (Toulouse) - Let us get the mentions out of the way first. Solid efforts from Peter O'Mahony, Gerhard Vosloo and as per usual, Sam Warburton, kept our selection cogs turning. But for being the best of a surprisingly bad bunch, Dusautoir sneaks in.

6 John Muldoon (Connacht) -Tom Croft was man-of-the-match for Leicester against Aironi and, despite the opposition, sent out a message to Stuart Lancaster that he should not be overlooked for their Six Nations opener. Yet there was a certain blindside flanker at the Sportsground who stood head and shoulders above the rest on Friday as Connacht brought to an end their dismal run of fourteen successive defeats. Take a bow John Muldoon.

5 Mouritz Botha (Saracens) - A try from the EPS member comes at just the right time as he begins his training battle with Tom Palmer, Courtney Lawes, Dave Attwood and the currently injured Louis Deacon. On form, Stuart Lancaster would be hard pressed to ignore this lock.

4 Paul O'Connell (Munster) - The stand-in Ireland captain can be delighted with his recent form as he carried superbly for the Munster cause. It just remains to be seen who will be partnering him in green as Donnacha Ryan and Donncha O'Callaghan continue to battle.

3 John Afoa (Ulster) - The majority wouldn't have expected to an Osprey in the mix this week following their 36-5 loss to Biarritz, yet Adam Jones came extremely close after a strong performance. However, Afoa continued his good form in an Ulster jersey around the park and was unlucky to be on a losing side. Brian Mujati also deserves a big tip of the cap.

2 Ti'i Paulo (Clermont) - We were scratching our heads wondering why he was not starting for les Jaunards against the powerful scrummaging outfit that is Ulster. But on 52 minutes he got onto the field and duly crossed for what turned out being the deciding seven-pointer.

1 Soane Tonga'uiha (Northampton) - It was a toss-up between the impact Vincent Debaty of Clermont made from the bench when he came on and the frightening impact Tonga'uiha made at scrum time. The Tongan conjured up two penalty tries for Northampton. Immense.

@Andrewinkorea

Normally don't get too serious about these types of things, but Healy was clearly better than Tonga'uiha. Tonga'uiha had a fairly average game by his standards I thought.

Jesus, why do you bother with the team of the week PR? I'm an Irish and Leinster fan but every week I see the same usernames (supporting Irish teams) coming on here and bitching because the team is not what they want to see...Lads, give it a rest. This is PRs team, not your's. If you don't like it, set up your own website and make your own list, or at least ask PR to e-mail it to you in advance of publication for your own special approval.

Even if the team of the week is centered too heavily on English rugby, who cares? Delight in the fact that your tea are through to the QFs (something of actual importance) and stop moaning about what the writers think (something of significantly less importance).

@papachinzo - if you have such a hatred for European rugby, why do you bother watching it, just out of interest? As for your list, I appreciate they made it through but didn't Toulouse get comprehensively spanked by Gloucester? And Quins beat them quite convincingly on their own turf, too...

Not Arsed if any Connacht players are or are notnamed frankly. Doubt Muldoon will even blink at seeing his name mentioned. The win against Quins was the only moment of import last weekend. By the bye, for me young Laidlaw at Edinburgh looked the real deal at flyhalf, very impressed with his overall game. Think there might be a big future for this young Scot...

@ NHsaints

Actually anyone who knows anything about the scrum will debate that. NH never scrummage legally, when they are made to they are sent backwards. If the NH front row was that good then they would win doing it legally, they can't, so they're not. I can tell you exactly what they are doing illegally if you want me to, but I think you know all too well that the NH scrum is not what it's made out to be

Posted 00:18 24th January 2012

curates_egg says...

@NHsaints because his scrummaging is 100% illegal - sideways and inwards. It is not bitterness against Tonga'uiha, per se, more bitterness against referees for allowing it (see the HCup final last year - in the first half, the ref allowed it, in the second half, he reffed it and it made a big difference), and bitterness against Planet Rugby for its fawning, uncritical praise. Tonga'uiha is a good player but he is a cheat in the scrums.

Posted 22:58 23rd January 2012

tombomb says...

NHsaints "Why are people so bitter against Tonguiha" maybe it's because northamton constantly cheat in the scrum drive up at an angle (illegal) and then pop up out of the (illegal) scrum and then keep pushing forward. they get away whit it because most ref's don't have a clue about the scrum they just award the team that are going forward even if that team is obviously cheating

hmmm, I would have gone for:

15.Kearney 14.S.Sivivatu 13.F.Styen 12.Estabanez 11.Brendan Williams 10.O'Gara 9.Botes 8.Barbieri 7.Zanni 6.Ferris 5.O'Connell 4.Samu 3.Afoa 2.Ti'i Paulo 1.Healy

@froggy73

Your right, thankfully we do have the 6N and World Cup to remind us of how bad ALL of the Northern nations are, and the Heineken Cup to remind us who the best of the bad are...(Leinster, Toulouse, Munster).

Lucasrg says...

Bravo Barbieri! He is pretty dominant in every game. Although the N 8 in the Italian sqad is sorted (parisse) Barbieri can easly play at 6. With Zanni on the otherside Italy have a very good back row.

Estebanez is the right choice at 12 for France, he also have a very good right boot. would be stupid not to summon him for the 6N.

Team of this week should be all in all Munster with a strong performance .that was so sweet to watch on tv.

Posted 20:45 23rd January 2012

NHsaints says...

Why are people so bitter against Tonguiha just because he's so destructive in the scrum...the physics are simple...there's just no-one with the muscle and height of the Northampton Front row...got to say though that it is in part to do with the fact the saints have probably the best scrummaging front row in the world, I don't think many can or will debate that...

@KiwiRooster, good to hear you're still alive and kicking! As ever, some interesting insights. I too have always been a fan of Estebanez. He became the forgotten man of the RWC campaign due to the crazy red card vs tonga (not mentioned as much as some other red cards!!) and since Mermoz in the end played OK. Might still get in the 6N squad if there are injuries, but Bastareaud is in the queue too. Who knows?

Posted 16:51 23rd January 2012

Rosbif says...

@ juliogrant. slightly harsh on Froggy73? but I think everyone can see your point......

I think Froggy73, in looking towards the 6N, might be referring to the (relatively speaking when compared to the HCup) underperformance of the Ire national team. It's a whole different topic, which others here are more knowledgeable about than me. But just looking at games vs Fra in 2011, it was 3-0 to the froggies i believe? And only 1 grand slam in 63 years....despite Munster and Leinster winning 4 of the last 6 HCups.....? Statistically, it's not trivial. What's the explanation?

(I hope you're not going to say its because Kidney is a worse coach than Lievremont hehehe) :-)

II thought some of the scarlets players were worth at least a mention. Obviously not as amazing as the northampton players who are not in Europe any more.

Froggy73: three out of the last eight (including first and second seeds), and the run away leaders of the premiership humbled by Connaught...... do you have any more drivel to share with us and keep us entertained?

For the number 6 jersey this week, my pick is Wenceslas Lauret (Biarritz Olympique) another one Philippe Saint-André should be looking at. The guy is almost a finished article and he is young, like Harinordoquy, Dusautoir, Ouedraogo and Bonnaire, Lauret has a complete arsenal. He impressed me a lot for his first cap against the Springboks (in South Africa) under Lièvremont a year ago, he and Andreu were the two only worthy bleu on the field on that rather infamous day for France. The third row is no issue for France, that's good news.

Regarding the centre position, I was a long advocate of Fabrice Estebanez when he was still playing in Brive. I wish he had replaced Jauzion 2 years before the World Cup where he did not have any experience at that level. You can tell he played rugby league (XIII) by his agressive powerful runnings and off-loads and beyond that he has the vision and skills that made him a decent fly-half.

Estebanez is a missed opportunity, he started with union, clubs were not interested (some French clubs clearly lost their nose for good players) so he moved out to playing league and even rugby 7 (which you can also tell by his style). Somehow, the profile of Estebanez (union/league/rugby 7) makes him more like a southern hemisphere player. Fofana is another one who has all the characteristics of a rugby league player. I am not convinced it would fit at other positions but for the centre and winger positions, I find those modern profile fantastic.

Pity Estebanez will be a bit old when comes 2015. If there is one reason PSA might not pick him, it could be his age vs experience ratio at this level. I just like his ability to call the shots compared with a player like Mermoz for instance. Mermoz is very instinctive but he not quite as complete as Estebanez.

Estebanez / Fofana could be a terrific combination on the day.

Alot of stella performances this round and its nice that so many where by up an comming players or by teams regarded as perenile underdogs IE Treviso -Connacht- Edinburgh.Bodes well for the future of the game imo. Still cant see past Lienster or maybe now Munster as winners though

I agree with all the comments. I am amazed referees do not clamp down on Tonga'uiha's illegal scrummaging, I am more amazed a good website like PR can't see it for what it is. Healy was the pick of the looseheads I saw this weekend.

Deggers says...

I agree with the other comments, I really enjoy PR, but they always do seem to like not only Northampton but all English sides, I don't think Moutitz Botha had a good game at all, in fact which Irish team would have him starting at 5? Maybe Connacht he is a journeyman at best! Why would no Super rugby teams offer him anything when he was younger? Cian Healy is lightyears ahead of Tonga'uiha

Each Monday comes the same old whining from the Irish fans. Not enough Leinster, not enough Ulster, not enough Munster (blah blah). Guys, in case you forgot, the Irish players are not the only one to know how to play rugby ! Luckily the 6N and WC are there to remind you now and then.
