Ben Mowen: Promoted to vice-captaincy

Wallabies back-rower Ben Mowen is confident they can overcome the loss of skipper James Horwill to injury in Saturday's Test against the Springboks in Brisbane.

Horwill's withdrawal due to a hamstring injury - sustained at training on Tuesday - sent shockwaves through the Wallabies camp but Horwill believes it's an issue they can overcome.

"Anytime you lose a guy of James' leadership and what he brings, it's then up to the rest of the guys to lift their game," Mowen said at a press conference.

Horwill's place at lock will be taken by Kane Douglas, who Mowen backed to make an impact.

"He's a big aggressive bloke anyway, so he brings his own style to the match, and the form he's been in this year I'm looking forward to see him play," Mowen said.

Horwill's injury means Will Genia will captain the Wallabies while Mowen's phenomenal rise through the rugby ranks sees him being promoted to the vice-captaincy.

"It's the proudest moment of my career, and I feel very privileged to be given that honour," Mowen added.
