Wycliff Palu: Requires surgery

Wallaby and Waratahs number eight Wycliff Palu has been ruled out for the remainder of the year because of a persistent knee injury.

Wallaby number eight Wycliff Palu has been ruled out for the rest of the year with a persistent knee injury.

Palu has been struggling to overcome the injury for most of the season but was hopeful of playing some part in the Rugby Championship.

But those hopes were dashed when scans revealed that the Waratahs stalwart will require surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee.

That means that he will miss the rest of the Rugby Championship and is highly unlikely to recover in time for the Wallabies' end-of-year tour of the United Kingdom and Europe.

"I have not put a time limit on my return, I am just taking it one day at a time," Palu told News Limited.

"I do want to make sure I take all the right steps.

"I won't be coming back to play until I am 100 percent, which is something I have done in the past and that has led to other injuries."

This setback is a similar injury Palu had in 2011.

The 31-year-old's career has been hampered by injuries. In the past, he also had lengthy spells on the sidelines with shoulder and hamstring problems.
