Cheetahs coaching staff have defended prop Trevor Nyakane, after claims he was dropped by the Springboks for being overweight.
Nyakane was axed over the weekend for "breaching team protocol", after missing a video session and a flight to the South African training camp last week.
Speculation was that the 24-year-old's eating and weight had been a concern for the Springboks coaching staff.
However, Cheetahs fitness coach Niel du Plessis has hit back at the claims by insisting that Nyakane is at the same weight he played at during Super Rugby, whilst sticking to his own personalised fitness program.
"Trevor played all the Super-games and I don't think he would have done any better had he been lighter," said Du Plessis to Volksblad.
"As long as Trevor can get around the park, carry the ball and scrum well, then there's not much wrong."
Nyakane will now play for the Cheetahs in the Currie Cup against the Sharks on Friday.
