Rene Ranger: Prefers to play in ITM Cup

Blues utility back Rene Ranger has made himself unavailable for selection for the All Blacks' Rugby Championship squad which will be named on Sunday.

Ranger cited personal reasons and will instead captain Northland in the ITM Cup. His decision could mean the end of his international career as he will leave to play for Montpellier at the end of the year.

Northland coach Derren Witcombe said he found out on Friday that Ranger would play a full part in their provincial campaign.

"Rene's made a personal decision, he wants to be home with his partner and baby so it's a pretty hard decision for him to make I believe, but we're chuffed," he told Newstalk ZB.

The loss of Ranger will be a blow to All Blacks coach Steve Hansen's midfield and outside backs stocks.

The 26-year-old played in six Tests for New Zealand after making his debut in 2010.

He was involved in all three Tests of the recently-completed series against France.
