Australia captain James Horwill is confident new Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie will be successful in the international arena.

Former Reds boss McKenzie took over the reins at the Wallabies from Robbie Deans after their recent 2-1 series defeat to the British and Irish Lions.

Horwill feels McKenzie can replicate the success he had at the Super Rugby level with the Reds. McKenzie was at the helm when the Brisbane-based franchise won the 2011 Super Rugby championship.

"He's a very intelligent coach that looks at the game differently," Horwill told ABC Grandstand Sport.

"That's something that has been really impressive that I've found with him is his ability to change game styles and the way we play suited to different opposition.

"Obviously Test rugby is different to Super Rugby but I feel he has got the ability to do that with the coaching structure and they way he is going to coach the team."

Horwill said the Wallabies will know where they stand with their new coach whose first match in charge is against New Zealand in a Rugby Championship clash in Sydney next month.

"I think he will bring an understanding of the way we want to play and how we want to play," he explained.

"I think there will be no gray areas in what is expected on the field and off it."
