@Trinats2: Your belief in the Wallabies is commendable but it's also a little megalomanic.

@trinats, well lets review this, SA have lost to Scotland..... well, never! Aus S15 sides didnt feature in the top 6 by points in the competition, though as a consolation to prevent any whinging, they allowed their least rubbish team to play in the quarters, and got beaten by the 3rd ranked SA side.

If Australia avoid the wooden spoon then I will be pleasantly horrified that I mistook them for also rans

bloemboy:

On present form ? Australia No.2 in the world, beat the 6 nations champions 3 -0. won Tri nations last year. When was the last time SA beat Australia ?

SA beat England(just) and finished Bottom of the tri nations (yet again)

Or maybe you think (hope) SA will play the same Wallaby side that lost to Scotland !!!!

Once the Bokke move away from their kicking game they will become invincable pretty quickly. However, to do so will require a some bold thinking and a change of personnel.

This is a pretty good squad for the initial match.... as always there are two or three players lucky to have been selected....

HM has his bulls tinted specs on again! Some of the Currie Cup B-divison halfback pairs are playing better than the bulls pair.

Ludick is a far better prospect at fullback.

@Trinats2, I think you may just be right about the wooden spoon.

Ramage.

Walsh needs to focus on his own officiating, to avoiding repeating the horror feast shown at the SR's final. Quite lucky that he did not influence the result.

Going to bed worried. While the forwards are ok, the back mix does not convince me. If Kirchener is the best fullback in SA, then we have a pb here. As I have already commented, Steyn JdV do not go well together. Hougaard did not improve in his kicking accuracy. The bench selection is weird too.

South Africa has the most common sense of the 3N teams in terms of not cutting their nose off to spite their face when it comes to selecting overseas based players and yet they continue to leave Schalk Brits out. Yes they have the most dynamic hooker in the world in du Plessis but certainly Brits should at least be on the bench.

Should be

South Africa: 15 Joe Pieterson, 14 Bryan Habana, 13 Jean de Villiers (captain), 12 Frans Steyn, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Pat Lambie, 9 Francois Hougaard, 8 Keegan Daniel, 7 Willem Alberts, 6 Siya Kolisi, 5 Andries Bekker, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Bismarck du Plessis, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.

Replacements: 16 Adriaan Strauss, 17 Pat Cilliers, 18 Flip van der Merwe, 19 Marcel Coetzee , 20 Ruan Pienaar, 21 Morné Steyn, 22 Juan de Jongh.

Good for him, he's had a turbulent time getting there but his passion to play for the Boks has seen him through thank goodness. Goons like PdV could have turned him away forever. Now he's vital for the Boks and the partnership with JdV looks great. Imagine how this guy will combine with the likes of Serfontein once JdV quits, mouthwatering! Just need a Frans clone to cover fullback too, for the life of me I don't see why Lambie isn't first choice there, Taute to come through.

@ FISH: Google "Krusty" and you'll see why he is a clown

@ NHsaints:

- Kankowski moved to the Japanese Top League and didn't get permission from his club to play for the Boks

- Willie le Roux is suspended for a high tackle, so even if he was called up, he wouldn't be allowed to play

- Aplon is a winger, not a full-back. Louis Ludik deserved to be in the team. he is the form full-back in South Africa

@Trinats, good wind-up, though realistically Australia will do well to avoid the wooden spoon this year. On form at present, Australia would probably take the wooden spoon if the championship included Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Japan, Zimbabwe and Bolivia (ok Bolivia is possibly stretching it, but not by far)

I would definitely have started Lambie at 10 with Pienaar at 9 and Aplon at 15. the interesting thing for me will be what happens when Goosen is back. there is just no way to leave him out of the team. If he was in any other country, he would be first pick if fit, even ahead of Carter imho as he will carry the flag for many years to come.

NHsaints says...

What the hell is going on with these selections?! HM is more one dimensional and stubborn than MJ was...Lambie should be 10, Le roux or at least aplon 15... Good midfield but where is kankowski in the backrow? I have no qualms about mvovo, he's been on great form this season, still would make more sense to have le roux on wing.

Congrats to Frans Steyn 50 games for your country is a milestone to be proud of. A piece of advice for Steve Walsh be very careful of any advice coming from the TMO make sure you make your own decisions and not his parochial ones.

Definitely not convinced by Potgieter or Englebrecht but Coetzee is slowly winning me over. I'm ambivalent about Kirchner; on the one hand he can go MIA and is a liability on defense but on the other hand Lambie at 15 is boring and not much better defensively. Personally, I'd have given Aplon the nod because he is a decent if not spectacular defender but in my opinion the only long term option is Willie le Roux. I hope he has a good Currie cup and gets selected for the end-of-year-tour. A bigger cause for concern has been the conditioning of the SA players during Super Rugby. Oosthuizen in particular is going to be sorely missed come the Australasian leg and the thought of Potgieter starting the match in Dunedin gives me palpitations.

Congrats Frans on your 50, hope you have a great game. Also I see we have our token Blue Bulls on the team. No idea why, otherwise looks like a pretty good team.
