Wales number eight Taulupe Faletau believes Wales can approach their looming tour of South Africa with confidence in June despite a hit-and-miss Six Nations campaign.

Defeats to Ireland and England ensured Warren Gatland's men could not successfully defend their title nor manage to notch an historic third successive Championship.

But Faletau, who crossed for one of seven tries in Saturday's record 51-3 drubbing of 14-man Scotland, reckons the inconsistent campaign can still offer a good grounding for the trip south.

"We wanted to end on a good note and we're happy with the result," Faletau told the Western Telegraph.

"It's not mission impossible in South Africa. We'll be going out there with optimism.

"The boys won't be going out there to lose and hopefully it will be a good tour for Wales.

"Scotland were a bit more vulnerable when they got the red card and we managed to get a few points on the board.

"We were good in patches but I guess we could have been more clinical, which is something we need to work on.

"I guess overall we've got to be disappointed with how the tournament has gone for us.

"We wanted to win the championship but it didn't quite happen for us."
