Frustrated: Jonathan Davies

"We have been inconsistent at times. But it is a sign of where we are as a team that we pride ourselves to be competing for championships.

"It was weird not having something to play for this week but we showed the character of the team.

"We just need to make sure our accuracy, how we use the ball and where we play, gets better.

Wales centre Jonathan Davies bemoaned his side's inconsistency after a Six Nations that left the defending champions in mid-table.

Warren Gatlands men, champions in 2013 and 2012, endured a stop-start campaign, with comfortable wins over Italy, France and Scotland marred by crucial defeats in Dublin and at Twickenham.

Their tournament was rounded off in style with a record 51-3 drubbing of Scotland, who had full-back Stuart Hogg sent off barely with barely a quarter of the match gone.

But Davies admits the overriding feeling come the close of the competition was one of frustration.

"We have been inconsistent at times. But it is a sign of where we are as a team that we pride ourselves to be competing for championships," said Davies.

"It was weird not having something to play for this week but we showed the character of the team.

"We just need to make sure our accuracy, how we use the ball and where we play, gets better.

"Considering we put some pressure on ourselves to deliver a performance against Scotland, I thought it was pretty good.

"It was nice to get a bit of ball in some space.

"Obviously, them being down to 14 men helped us but we had to make sure we used the ball effectively. We scored some good tries.

"Opportunities came and we took them. The best teams in the world finish off teams - they put them to the sword.

"That is what we talked about when they went down to 14 men, to keep going for the whole game.

"To be fair to Scotland, they kept the ball in the second half, but we were always in control."
