England toil to defeat Italy

England were left frustrated by a resurgent Italian performance as the hosts kept their Grand Slam hopes alive with an 18-11 win.

Six penalties from Toby Flood kept England ahead on the scoreboard as Italy recovered from a 15-3 deficit at the start of the second half to leave Twickenham on edge in a dramatic finish.

The Azzurri resembled the side that were so impressive in their opening game of the championship against France - hounding England in defence and creating ample attacking opportunities in the second half against an opponent who they have never defeated.

Only desperate defence from England going into the final 10 minutes kept the hosts clinging on to the lead, with all thoughts of a first Grand Slam in a decade put firmly on hold.

England signalled their intent early on with a penalty from Toby Flood after just three minutes - the Leicester fly-half coming in for the injured Owen Farrell.

Mike Brown came close to the opening try after Luciano Orquera's kick was charged down, but the ball eluded him as he tried to make the grounding.

The hosts enjoyed all the possession throughout the opening minutes but were unable to find the opening try, Flood settling for another three points to leave England 6-0 up after 15 minutes.

Italy responded on their first visit to England's half with a penalty from Orquera after an effective driving maul, lifting the voices of the visiting fans. The Azzurri supporters grew even louder minutes later when Alessandro Zanni burst down the left touchline after Sergio Parisse's inside flick - only for the ball to be knocked on.

England's large swathes of possession created another try-scoring opportunity for the hosts, but Flood's attempted score was ruled out. Italy then lost scrum-half Edoardo Gori to the sin-bin for taking out Flood off the ball.

The hosts' power at the scrum was again capitalised on by Flood, who added a further three more points after a fine break from Brown to leave England 12-3 up going into the interval after a frustrating half for the home fans.

Another Flood penalty at the start of the second half extended the gap and left Italy chasing the scoreboard, Orquera responding with a penalty of his own after England collapsed at the scrum.

Care's sloppy box kick was then taken out of the air by Andrea Masi and Orquera's delicate chip across to the left wing was snapped up by Luke McLean to score in the corner.

Giovambattista Venditti then carried down the right touchline to leave English tacklers on the deck, but Orquera's resultant penalty attempt fell well wide to the right - failing to make the most of a passage of play where England lost control.

The introduction of Ben Youngs steadied Flood and England crept back to a seven-point advantage thanks to another penalty from the Leicester number 10.

Italy however continued to produce some of their best rugby in this year's championship, finding space down the left-hand side through McLean.

It meant that England were clinging on desperately to their lead as time ticked away, until a knock-on five metres from their own try line led to a collective sigh of relief from the 82,000 crowd.

Twickenham expected a thrashing - the humbled crowd left booing and counting their blessings.

Man of the Match: A whole host of Italian candidates to choose from in defeat, with Alessandro Zanni getting the nod ahead of his captain Parisse, Masi and winger McLean.

Moment of the Match: Courtney Lawes' crucial line-out steal with two minutes remaining that helped England ease the Italian pressure.

Villain of the Match: Starting his first Test for some time, Toby Flood may have kicked well off the tee but struggled to get England's backs firing.

Ive never heard such rubbish in all my life, yes, wales are stuttering but wins in Italy, France and Scotland cannot be ignored and make them just as deserved of the six nations title. How many tries have England scored?.......

A tough game and a hard fought win against one of the better teams in this years tournament. Wales and Scotland are the two weakest sides this year so, providing England don't drop below Sunday's performance we should win by at least 10 ....... Grand Slam not & never was in doubt.

No killer instinct for Italy. That's why Clancy survived.

That was very disappointing, so what did we learn

1- Flood is not good enough to be our second choice #10 and I would not waste anymore time on him, he has had 50+ caps to prove his worth and he has not delivered. Farrell, Burns and lets see how Ford gets on.

2- There is not enough pace or execution in the back 3, move Brown to his natural position and where he plays well, DROP ASHTON and bring in two inform wingers that know where to pop up and finish, Foden, Wade, Vanrndell and May would be my options.

3- 36 needs to start, you cant bring him on with 13 minutes left and expect if to turn a game, Youngs, Burns and 36 should have come on at half time.

4- We play like that against Wales and there will be on Grand Slam thats for sure.

Anybody remember when the try was only 3 points? it took a while to bring it to 4 and finally to 5 points. It is time now to think about a 3 point penalty, especially when infringements in the scrum are almost impossible to avoid. A good referee should never decide a match.

So its a Wales vs England decider....

Wales don't deserve to win at all. They have been pretty awful.

England were awful today too but credit to Italy who were awesome. Not to mention that England have been great the rest of the championship too and are the only team that deserve to win the cup

Well that second half was as exciting as any this year. I found myself screaming at the ref for Blue penalty several times, england tackler smothering the carrier on the floor. Masi and McLean were electric, these guys were busting tackles at will when give 3 steps to get up to speed. Masi's high ball takes were excellent, reminded me of Kearney last year. And he is a chunky unit.

So disappointed with Clancy, that game could have been Italy's if he was watching both sides of the tackle area. If Italy play with that same continuity against Ireland next week, they can win. They always sought to move the ball wide and threw skip passes to make it happen faster, they also did this against France. England were so out on their feet at the end they didn't even raise their arms in celebration.

The bookies had engalnd 100-1 on. That sort of disrespect deserves a good beating at the hands of the Welsh.

Having watched all the games this weekend the best performance (by a margin) was Italy - they were awesome!

But England weathered the storm and the defence looked strong - good, hard game to warm up for Wales.

But for the life of me I can't figure out why Wales fans think they are going to blow England away? It will be close - but Wales looked ordinary yesterday as well - very ordinary (against a much worse team than Italy - certainly against a worse performance than Italy put in).

Should be a good deciding game - we shall see!

Of course Nitoglia is much much much better than Venditti. Apparently, though, he is refusing to play for Italy after an undeserved cut by Mallet.

Completely agree. Clancy was a hometown ref, and is very arrogant. Im irish and will be in rome for our game. Italy should have got at least five penalties in the second half. No Guarantee Orquera would have scored them as he did not look like scoring the difficult ones.

I'm sure I'm not the only non-Italian who have adopted Italy as their second team since they joined the six nations and the last two games they were so lacklustre but today they were excellent and deserved at least a draw. Mallet was good for Italy but was so outwardly negative about their chances, Brunel is more positive and you can see the confidence rising in the players. With a bit more composure and belief and they would have won today (plus maybe a bit of help from Mr Clancy!). I hope they back up today next week because they must fancy their chances against an injury ravaged Ireland at home. Brunel must stick with Orquera, 2 good games and 1 rubbish game, not a bad return.

Flood, Goode, Barrett and Ashton need to be dropped, Brown to FB and Wade and Monye to the wins, or Biggsy. Burns is a must if we want to get our back line firing, and I feel we badly miss Corbisiero - well played Italy, Zanni and Parisse superb.

Flood diving and calling for a penalty when gori was carded, Absolutely pathetic and a bad habit picked up from football. The contact was very minimal. Hope wales stuff them.

Congrats to England but it's too hard to play 15vs16... With Scotland we would have lost anyway... but today the referee robbed our match and this is not acceptable at these levels!

Good afternoon at Twickenham for me, always a rewarding experience.

Moreover Italy did a good game and the best against England in London. Very happy and proud of my guys.

Still...Venditti has to improve a lot and a liability in defence.I would consider Nitoglia for the next game.

Unlike Scotland who had decent backs but always kicking the ball at every possession, Italy kept faith to the plan and play out wide nicely.

Clancy had a poor game. Really penalized Italy in the last 10 where there were so many infringements and a early engagement by the English scrum 5 miters out.

We still need that killer instinct achieve great results, but all in all the best game against England so far.

So glad I was there.

One special mention for Lo Cicero who took his 102nd cap today, one more than Troncon. He's the Azzurri absolut recordman now. He made his first appearance in 1999, one year before the 5N became 6. This is probably the last 6N presence of his long career. Stand up for the "Barone"!
