I think that the Welsh had to do what they did to avoid a precedent being set. The main issue I have is that it seems to have been a little murky as to the way that they did it. Shingler is clear that he refused to accept his capture by the Welsh but that seems to have been his earlier caps which were not considered representative at the time.

The right thing to do for Wales, now that they have won their case, is to release Shingler, the problem is that I don't think that the framework exists in the IRB for him to do it.

Would never get near the Welsh team but would probably have been Scotlands greatest ever player.

Well said Melkdave!

Unfortunately where most of us at laymen level would agree the common sense approach, these people at committee levels in the rugby unions and IRB are like politicians and have potentially a lifetime of expenses, freebies and jollies so why rock the boat and risk it over one young player who means nothing to them!!!

I wondered if his brother Aaron ShIngler was really in the reckoning for a Wales spot or if it was just a fortunate opportunity to strengthen the WRU's case!..

Be interesting to see if Steven does get selected years to come...

@plasboy

Shinglers problem has always been that both teams Wales U20 and FranceU20 where designated as the countries 2nd or A teams that year,France had no A team squad because of the RWC .It is the first and only time that has happend.Thus for that one match and only that one match Wales A played France A in theory and practice.No other U20s match in that tourament or ever has had 2 designated national teams playing eachother.Therefor IRB regulation 8 just dosent apply to any other U20s match ever.I dont agree with the IRBs decision mind you,but technically its correct .You would have thought they would have given Shingler the benifit of the dought considering he and i expect at lot of players just didnt know ,that playing that one match would decide his international playing future.Niow i suspect a talanted player will never play international rugby ,and his dream of doing so is crushed

Yet, Toby Fala.. can play for Wales because he's lived there for a few years and Tim Visser can play for Scotland for the same reason!!!! Shingler ain't gonna be plying international rugby for anyone.. unless the WRU are a very forgiving organisation! Shame, waste of talent!!

If I recall correctly, Clyde Rathbone won the U20 World cup captaining South Africa before going to play senior international rugby for Australia.

"IRB, this is consistency. I don't think you've met."
