I would say Lancaster has achieved instant results whereas Clive Woodward was useless for all but one year of his tenure with England.

Mallett could do this job, and do it well, but why change something that is working. Only the RFU could screw up a good thing.

France should be looking hard at Mallett rather than sticking with a coach who is deluded enough to pick Beauxis.

@ heathy - I don't see how hiring Mallett and Wayne Smith to work above/alongside SL could embarrass us. If it's good enough for New Zealand (the three wise men!), and to a certain extent, Wales, then it must be worth considering. They'd provide the international expertise and experience of winning a world cup to alongside SL's excellent work with England to date. I'd agree with keeping Rowntree on, not convinced on Farrell Snr!

@ Shokai and EDITOR - what on earth was that?! I get a yellow card for some flippant humour about being English, yet you allow this?!

Travesty if Lancaster doesn't get the job.

Hopfully SL and GR will be confirmed as the national coaches A.Farral unfortunatly is going back to Sarries .So it will be very interesting to see who the RFU appoint in his place ( hope he fits well with SL&GR)

All of the things SL lists are very important as a National coach. The only thing that Mallet has over Lancaster is Internatioanl experience, Lancaster knows the players the teams the ethos and that has to be worth far more! A side from that Lancaster has earnt the respect of the whole nation and more importantly the players. The bring in someone else now would mean starting from scratch all over again. It would be the most monumentally stupid decision not to give him the job and it is that that's got me worried because this is the RFU we're talking about!

@ Sharkyzulu - I think you've hit the nail on the head there! It's very easy to support a coach when the team is winning but the real test of a coach is the ability to turn things round when the team is losing. However, unless you give the man a chance you'll never know. And I think he's earnt a chance!

Plus, if it's a straight call between Lancaster and Mallet I'd opt for Mallet. England = English. Born and bloody bred in my book!

Is he the right man for the job? Based on the 5 games its hard to tell. England played virtually no rugby in 3 games, but played well in 2. I think he deserves a longer trial.

If the world cup was this October coming it could be argued that Lancaster does not have enough international experience. The fact that it is four years away it gives him plenty of time. He has proven he can install the correct culture, attitude and passion into the EPS squad and as he rightly says, he knows England, it's system, the club game, the culture and the players. That must count for a lot.

Best way to put it is.....I have usual been partial to a replica England jersey but after the world cup I did not want to buy the current one, I'm not sure if I would have even wiped my a*** with it. After the 6 nations I quite fancy buying one. Thats what Lancaster has done for the shirt!!!

As much as a Mallet supporter, Lancaster is the man that English rugby needs. He already delivered an impressive side full of youngsters with a bright future ahead. None expected England to perform so well this year. In my opinion, his game play and plan was much superior then MJ's.

Mallett, good or bad, would bring further changes that England really don't need at the moment.

Lancaster had the quality to take raw talents to a better level such as Corbisiero, Farrell, Botha, Morgan, Barritt and Robshaw.

He should stay.

Well Done.

Lancaster looks good now but what happens when England lose momentum at international level? Presumably England will play some internationals outside of Europe - what does Lancaster know about playing in the SH?

It will be interesting to see whether the RFU go with their heads or their hearts on this one!
