@flyman says... James Small v Jonah Lomu.

What? Small played NZ 9 times for one win '92-97; he never scored a point v NZ.

They were only ever on the same field twice - J'burg in 95 and Chch '96.

Two matches don't quite convince me.

@ManWarrior - as you're from the future (are there any trees still in the year 20110?), any chance you could tell me what the score will be from this game so I don't have to get up for it? Thanks in advance. ;)

@rognvald

don't worry, keep your coach's advise, creativity is not for the faint hearted anyway.

Don't think your book would be too informative?

To be honest as a welshman i think South Africa were surprised at how physical and direct we were but they know exactly what Samoa are going to do and unless Samoa change their game up a bit the boks are going to suffocate them out of this one

I think the Boks should be more worried about the breakdown. Wales were schooled by Samoa and yet had a good day at the office against the Boks... I think if they can avoid too many turnovers they will win, don't compete at the breakdown and Samoa will be a different animal altogether.

@cayzam & bokloversupreme

Correct - Jonah never got one against you boys. 12 games (9 starts) and no tries! I remember Joost being put out on the wing to mark him, as he was your best defender.. worked a treat.

Interestingly, when I looked this up I noticed that Cullen (a totally different type of attacking threat) had the great record of 7 tries in 9 tests against the Boks.

Personally, I don't see Tuilagi being that much of a threat, as he won't be getting too much front foot ball, or room to build up steam. The boks forwards may not totally dominate, but I think they'll have the edge on the Samoans... making it tough for them to attack.

I saw Brad Barrit nail him and knock him backwards last year - Saracens vs Leicester.

@rognvald

i see you n your coach both need to learn about tackling. if i (not you or your coach) tackle him from the side, there is no way he can offload. perhaps i should write a book about tackling techniques.

I 've just noticed that James Small is mentioned as someone who stopped Jonah Lomu, Perhaps not, but it limited what LOMu was able to do. I Was the person who emailed Small and noted that the English wingers did not concentrate on tackling with a concerted and conscious effort to wrap theeir arms around Jonay and not stick their arms out in the surrender fashion proper physical focus by any tackler should slow the opponent down sufficiently so for the tempo to be countered. Who I May be is of no consequence but when I tackled someone they were tackled, full stop.

That;s what I used to do to big strong wingers until our coach pointed out that I Was allowing the opponent the opportunity to pass me and off lod infield on the tackle. )Coach was Geoff Gray Springbok fly half, centre and wing. Go in hard and low conciously wrapping our arms as emailed to James Small and the Boks following which Jonah was curtailed.

Do you know that only Brian Lima raced down the field against Jonah Lomu tackling the winger fair and square? Alesana is heavy and can run straight at any player, fordwards or backs. Just let him pass you and then tackle him from the side. Finish.

Ulrich says...

I believe the plan will be to deprive our opposition from the ball, something we have not done too well lately. If we can keep it among our tight forwards with a little burst here and there we will stand a good chance. Samoa breakdown abilities makes it a very tough ask.

Dominate the tight phases and you should win this game.

Go low and go hard.... and get him before he gets going - cause once that happens you are in trouble. Some may laugh but both of our smaller wings Hougaard and Aplon are pretty damn good at getting in low for the tackle. Habana is brave but not the man for the job.

Just use the James Small tactics they used for Jonah Lomu.

bokloversupreme says...

The boks were able to stop Jonah Lomu. It's pretty easy. You get him down before he has reached cruising speed. Just hope and pray he does not receive the ball at full speed.

I guess we will use the same tactics we used for Jonah Lomu - in his whole career, I don't believe he ever scored a try against the Springboks.
