To all of you bitching about my comments, lets be clear on a number of things. If the Maori were coming here to play quality sides it would be worth it but a compilation of players from the championship will not even come close to a half decent Maori side. The chances of Leicester putting out a really competitive side in the middle of the Autumn international is IMHO remote.
As for one comment about do I expect the NZ public to fund the development of NZ players and teams... why not its their national sport. Perhaps the NZRFU should consider running their business more sensibly and given all the extra money the've demanded to appear in 2015 spend it more wisely.
As I've said before having the full SA, NZ and Australian sides here in the Autumn is fantastic and I'm going along to a number of the games but this strikes me as a poorly arranged commercial venture... lets see the numbers of bums on seats.

Apv1 agree: Saxons should play them. Even a Lions B team. Best of British and Irish not in the Autumn internationals.
Lawynd. Agree. Also Leicester were minus 11 international players. It was more of a second string than the Boks missing a few key players.

Of course I will be looking forward to this tour with Glee! I wont be to expectant on results due to the fact that Club teams do notoriously well against international teams. You wonder why?? Easy club teams play well due to the fact they play a lot of games together hence a great understanding of each other /game plans/ game situations,hence I'm picking Leicester to be the toughest game. Selection criteria is at least 1 great grand parent half-Maori. Nz'ers may remember Rene Ranger was unable to play for the Maori as he could not verify a a grand parent with said lineage. & "Pakeha" is short for the maori word "Pakehakeha" which was used to describe the pale skinned Faeries in Maori mythology!! (not an insult) Despite want many people may think. Current Maori eligible AB's are Dagg,Jane,Gear,Guilford,Kahui,Carter,smith,Weepu,Messam,Ellison! next Best Latimer,Braid's,Hoeata,Afeaki,Perenara,Lowe! I think we may have a mean Team!

Have to say im looking forward to the Marois touring ,and i cant understand the fuss some people are making.So its a team based on race ,but the critea is so lax,its meaningless1/8 maroi blood means having some ancestor being maroi or part maroiin the last 8 generations ,thats in the last 200 yrs going by the accepted generalisation of a new generation every 25 yrs,Thats hardly racist imo,,as i suspect most of the NZ population can trace at least 1 maroi ancestor,and thats including children of ex pats from the 60s and 70s ,who most probably married NZs.Also so what if its a money making excercise for the NZRU,all that really matters is the rugby is good ,and the matches are spectacles for us fans..I personnally think of the Marois as a NZ version of the Barbarains,and most of us love watching their games.I despair at times ,with people looking for something to moan about ,rather than just enjoy the game

Why don't you back up this "development for young players" mission statement with a link from their website? ...Because they are talking about club players taking the next step to international honours, not yougsters trying to break into the 1st team. You also may want to take a look at the side London Irish put out for the rugby 7's... or Bath... or Quins... ah hell I'm sure people get the jist. Same way as how anyone who's got SKY and watches the matches knows that I'm telling the truth about Leicester.

Paakehaa (sorry do not know how to add a macron above the letter a. In the Maaori language a macron serves to elongate the sound of the particular vowel in that word) is not a derogatory term. I believe the etymology of the term is: Paa meaning surface (papa) and kehaa an alternate word for white. Very similar to Papa'a in Cook Island Maaori, the two languages being distinct but very closely related. Papa meaning ground or surface and a meaning white. However looking at Wikipedia they give a different explanation although not definitive.
Paakehaa is certainly not derogative but simply a word Maaori used to define non-Maaori during the colonisation of NZ. The term Paakeha evolved to mean non-maaori and then as more immigrants arrived to NZ it came to mean white new zealanders and now I would personally describe a Pakeha as a white person of NZ origin. The word Maaori in itself was also coined around the same time as the word Paakeha so that Maaori themselves could differentiate their race from those of the new comers. The word Maaori meaning normal.
I am Maaori and lived for some time in the Cook Islands where the etymology of Papa'a was explained to me.
@Headhunter - name the last time NZ sent a development squad abroad? Development labelled teams obviously excluded. In 2005 NZ changed their starting XV for the Welsh and Irish matches on consecutive weekends but it could also be argued that NZ also had the two best XVs in the world anyway, then in 2011 NZ did not send their strongest possible team to play SA in SA. Apart from that I cannot think of any occasion where less than the best make it on to the plane (certain selections are debatable of course). NZ do not operate like some NH teams or even SA, the best get selected, NZ rugby is too competitive to allow anything less.

What is all this fuss about a team selected on the basis of race? The South Africans had a problem a few years ago with race based teams (this was applying to the Maori All Blacks)
The criteria for inclusion in the Maori team is being able to trace Whakapapa... someone who had a grand mother who was an 1/8 Maori would still be able to trace their geneology back to Maori forbears.... this is a pretty relaxed criteria if you ask me! Besides Maori culture is fairly well intwined with New Zealand culture.... This is a great tour for the Maori All Blacks..... this will be the peak for all those players not achieving international honours.

@ Sharkyzulu... I believe you must be at least 1/8 Maori to qualify ie one of your grandparents (?) I think must be Maori.

@jonesy2 Euskadi & rugby_rockstar - a Leicester Tigers development team comprehensively beat the Springboks dirt-trackers in 2009; I wouldn't be so quick to write them off.
Furthermore rugby_rockstar, the Premiership 7s and Anglo-Welsh are supposed to be for the development of young players. Leicester use these competitions for just that, so the result is obviously not as important as the experience. You've been bleating on elsewhere about the AP clubs not pulling their weight and developing players to play for England, yet when they do, you're still critical...unsurprisingly, you're proving yourself to be a weapon's-grade plonker, yet again.
@Headhunter99 - I would be disappointed if my club turned down what is effectively a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play a team like the Maori; how does that make Leicester 'greedy'? Do you disagree with clubs playing dirt-trackers as part of tour schedules? Did you think the South Africans were 'greedy' to play England in mid-week games during the summer?

@ craigsman - an even colder (probably) November afternoon in Doncaster will also be an interesting match...
It's a shame however, having travelled all this way north, that they won't be playing some of the developing rugby nations. There are those which are struggling and could do with the boost, in terms of marketing, ticket sales and good competition. I'm thinking of those European teams, which are really not in the top tier yet:
Romania, Russia, Georgia, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, and so on. All of those could either do with the exposure to quality rugby, or will benefit from playing at this level.

@ Carpelone the word is Pakeha... google will tell you the answers to your questions regarding eligibility. There are no full blooded Maori's left but unlike some other ethnic peoples nearly everyone with Maori blood knows which area and tribe they are from and who they represent.

the IRB site gives some more info: "Part of a wider programme of November fixtures for Tier Two Unions supported by the International Rugby Board to ensure that these nations have access to an annual high-level competition schedule within the RWC cycle"
and " RFU Championship XV will form to take on the Maori All Blacks in a first for the competition. Reflecting the growth of the second tier, the team will comprise the best of English qualified players in the RFU Championship thanks to the commitment and support from all 12 clubs."
Can't be bad - after RWC so many people demanding more games for these t2 teams, and now we have it. jamie joseph named as their coach - and former taranaki/nz man kieran crowley coaches canada.
i hope this thread can focus on rugby it is sure to bring out the trolls - there IS a nz maori team, get over it.
