Smith is a genius, and together with DC and McCaw is the player that you can not afford to be without.

Retinal detachment? This is serious stuff, I am not sure that he will be ready for any of the Rugby Championship.

Priority is to get well. Best wishes.

First Kahui, then Williams, now Smith. Toeava and Ellison would have been high quality replacements, but they're unavailable too.

Is the rest of the world getting lucky or what?

As for the next cab off the rank, Rene Ranger is a game breaker but also a head case; for every good thing he does he messes up a couple of times. So will Nonu revert to centre? With, Crotty or Bateman or even Hayward at second-five? And what if someone else (Nonu) gets injured? Will it just have to be Fruean?

New Zealand's midfield is going to be tested to a greater depth than anyone has ever had to go before. Still, a country like England hasn't even had a midfield for several years now, and they've bumbled along.

I can see the benefit of having someone stable and rather error free such as Adam Whitelock ,but I just think he's not quite up to it against the top teams.

I wouldn't mind seeing ben Smith tried out at centre. He has many of the same qualities as his namesake and provides a nice balance alongside Ma'a Nonu.

As for Fruean, he has shown that he still doesn't have the consistency and seems to go missing. For Rene Ranger it is the same.

I do quite like Tim Bateman, but if he were to play, that would force Nonu to move to 13 and that couldn't potentially just lead to more problems.

Most likely solution will be Nonu and Ellison together. Both All Blacks, both have played together at the Hurricanes and both are favoured by Hansen and co.

This is the last thing we Ab supporters wanted to hear! Conrad Smith is in the form of his life and has been inspirational at the canes this year. Replacing him will not just be hard but I think impossible.

Ellison at a stretch might be okay as a stop gap measure. Also Crotty & Bateman has shown some promise but not there yet. Besides that everyone else running around super rugby just aint up to it.

Damn you SBW! This could have been your time to shine.

Tamati Ellison is probably the next in line to replace Conrad Smith and deservedly so, but maybe Smith's injury opens up a spot for another debutant in the midfield.....hopefully Tim Bateman or Adam Whitelock. Tim Bateman would make a better combination with Fruean and Adam Whitelock would be great outside Ma'a Nonu. Players who compliment each others attributes are way better as a combo!!

@Craig - In fact Tamati Ellison will be available for the rugby chamionship as his injury was expected to last for three to four weeks from the 2nd of July........and Rene Ranger is an All Black, he played 2 tests in 2010 coming on as a replacement against Wales and starting on the left wing against the Boks in Wellington.

Adam Whitelock. You're a cantab right? What a joke. @ jmanngod he is the best centre in World rugby. Period. Has been for some time

This is a serious problem, and may be the difference in the championship. No Kahui, Smith, Toeva, SBW, or Ellison. Nonu a shoe in at 12, and Carter to back up, but then what? Fruean looked good outside SBW last yer, but has shown to be pretty 1 dimensional this year. Crotty = average, and Bateman, well maybe. Maybe Ben Smith???

Robbie Fruean - not even a contender; this season he's shown why often enough, solid provincial, adequate at times at Super level, and no international.

Tamati's injury will keep him out too? I thought he had recovered. He's a fantastic replacement. But without him, Kahui, or Smith, that just leaves Fruen and Ranger as the starting centres for their franchises this year. And neither are All Blacks. Ben Smith is an amazing player, but he's been at fullback or wing recently. Probably best bet though, with maybe Horrell on the bench to cover the outsides.?

Wow, what a blow!

As a Bok fan, I am dismayed that Smith and SBW are out. The ABs will have to pick a good player now!

I'm going to throw another name in the mix. Adam Whitelock as he's versatile and similar to Conrad Smith in that he's not flashy but solid, intelligent and rarely makes mistakes.
