Julian Savea: First All Black to get a hat-trick against Ireland

All Blacks wing Julian Savea scored a hat-trick on debut to help the world champions to a comprehensive 42-10 win over Ireland at Eden Park in Auckland on Saturday.

The talented speedster crossed twice in the first half and again after the break to cap a memorable night in his first Test outing for New Zealand, as the home side opened their 2012 account with a bang.

The win also saw the All Blacks extend their winning run at Eden Park to 28 Tests, dating back to 1994.

The visitors were outscored five tries to one, and based on this quality performance from the hosts, it looks like Ireland will have to wait a little longer for that elusive victory over the men in black.

Whilst the scoreline resembles one-way traffic, it took a while for New Zealand to click into a gear as the Irish threatened to give the home side a run for their money early on - Rob Kearney in particular impressing with ball in hand.

But with the scores level 3-3 after fly-halves Dan Carter and Jonathan Sexton traded penalties between them, the All Blacks started to find some rhythm.

Carter, who produced a near flawless display from the tee, added two more penalties from 50m out to stretch his side's lead to 9-3 before Savea struck with his first try in the 25th minute and New Zealand never looked back.

Ireland kicked away possession, not for the first time, and Zac Guildford got away with a fumble that saw the ball roll sideways. From there, the All Blacks were able to send it wide to Conrad Smith, who switched with Sonny Bill Williams. The inside centre made one of his trademark one-hand offloads to Carter and he sent Savea away for his first Test try.

Carter converted from bang in front, and the writing was on the wall for Ireland as Savea was once again the man of the moment after crossing over out wide for try number two just before half-time.

Carter was on target once again with the touchline conversion to give the All Blacks a deserved 23-3 lead at half-time, leaving Ireland with a hill to climb after the break.

The hill became a mountain after Savea was celebrating his hat-trick three minutes into the second half. The Hurricanes flyer had Israel Dagg to thank after the full-back drew in the cover defence - following some good interplay between Conrad Smith and Kieran Read in midfield - to put Savea over in the corner.

Carter raised the flags to make it 30-3 and the result was all but sealed. That was until the Irish finally hit back through a try by Fergus McFadden who, after a turnover, chased a kick ahead from Sexton and beat Richie McCaw to the ball for a seven-pointer.

With Ireland now in double figures, the green army of supporters were given a glimmer of hope. However, it wouldn't last long as normal activity resumed shortly after when Read broke away from the back of a 5m scrum and gave the try-scoring pass to replacement Adam Thomson.

Both teams rang the changes with 20 minutes remaining and Ireland weathered another spell of pressure from the home team and looked to have clawed themselves back into a respectable position when McFadden outsprinted Dagg 80 metres to score under the posts. But referee Nigel Owens had already called back play for an Irish offside.

There was further reason for Irish hearts to flutter in the final minutes as loosehead prop Cian Healy was injured and replaced by hooker Sean Cronin.

Conrad Smith was then rewarded for a fantastic performance when he dived over to the right of the posts after a slick pass from replacement Aaron Cruden. Carter added the extras to make it a 32-point buffer and give the Irish plenty to ponder ahead of next week's second Test in Christchurch.

Man of the match: For Ireland, Sean O'Brien and Rory Best were the pick of the forwards while Rob Kearney was a pillar of strength at the back. New Zealand number eight Kieran Read proved why he's rated the best in his position, while Carter was his influential self at 10 - finishing with a match haul of 17 points. Scrum-half Aaron Smith produced an outstanding debut with his rapid service keeping the backline moving, but wing Julian Savea gets our vote. A constant threat out wide, the 21-year-old made history by becoming the first All Black to get a hat-trick against Ireland in only his first Test appearance.

Moment of the match: Even though there were six tries scored in all, we've opted for Savea's bone-crunching hit on Kearney that proved New Zealand's hat-trick hero is no slouch on defence either.

Villain of the match: No cards, but the Irish got out of jail a few times when holding back All Black players on the attack.

The scorers:

Tries: Savea 3, Thomson, C Smith
Cons: Carter 4
Pens: Carter 3

BokA says "why don't they just install NZ at the top of the IRB ladder permanently?" Guess whay dropkick they are at the top of the IRB ladder permanently. Just my little jest for our Bokke friend.

As for the game so much for my view that Dagg was the only one out of form, he played really well, made some great runs. It was interesting to watch SBW viz-a-viz Nonu both can be pretty effective, Nonu with bash and SBW with flair, Nonu would be a better passer of the ball but some of SBW offloads are sublime. Both will sometimes lose the ball in the tackle and Nonu probably makes those little kicks a little better than SBW. Pretty good effort for a first up game by everyone really. Just watched the Wannabie v Wales game and in comparison AB's played as a team the Wannabies relied on individual brillance particulary from Genia.

Tough to watch at times, but NZ were mesmerising today. Such vision, executed with lethal precision, and backed up by intelligent support runners.

I hope Deccie starts Reddan next time out. Murray's general execution was inaccurate at times but generally OK. Nevertheless Ireland clearly need to do everything they can to try to match the ABs tempo, and Reddan offers something in that regard. Plus, I just don't think the Reddan-Sexton combination has been looked at closely enough in internationals. Give them an hour together on the pitch in the green jersey and we'll know a lot more about the options in the squad.

Hey Jonesy: if jersey pulling is a red card offence what do you get for spear tackling a lions captain off the ball?

hayj05: petty cheating claims? Haven't NZ been whining about food poisoning and gold watches for the last 17 years?

@Ruckingkiwi: I fail to see how you equate racism with my claim that the IRB favours NZ. However, while we're on the topic..the very name `All Black' is racist and should be banned from sport. It is commonly known that it was a moniker bestowed on NZ when a journalist wrote that they ran like they were `all blacks' ... that's racism my friend.

Hey Bokavenger: am I right... I think I saw McCaw slipping the ref a wad of cash just before one of the early penalties vs Ireland? Did you see it?

To all real rugby fans don't give any oxygen to that troll BokAvenger he only lives off his perverted view of the world and his belief in the world conspiracy theory against his country, so ignore him and confine him to the rubbish bins of Planet Rugby.

The game was for me a much better performance first up than I have see performed for many a year. There are still a number of areas that need attention such as the number of steals the Irish were able to make some tightening up at the kick offs, the number of penalties given away and some of the handling at times and wrong options of not moving a pass on and going too far. All no doubt will be worked on in the coming week. A very good start to the debutants. The dodgy OZ touch judge and TMO were given little chance to influence the game lol. I also believe Nigel Owens controlled the game and his usual over the top chatter well. Overall a good 7 out of 10 mark to the All Blacks

@jcahill1 - don't get me wrong SOB is a great player, but i think the Irish backrow would be better balanced if he were at 6 or 8. Yes, he got some good turnovers, he also made a pretty feeble attempt at tackling Savea in the first half. I don't recall any of his blockbusting runs which were such a feature when he played at 6 for Ireland.

ireland eviscerated. outplayed from 1 to 15 except , ironically, at 7. mccaw was poor.

i think ireland have a problem at scrum half and their front row is suspect.

owens is clearly the best ref in the world currently. one bad decision for all blacks second penalty and missed a couple of blatant offsides on both teams, but three errors in a game of that pace is a pretty stellar perfomance. had he been refing the world cup final france would be world champs. :)

Very impressive performance by the ABs. Immense power and skill in that team, feel sorry for the Irish as they weren't that bad, just played against an awesome team.

New Zealand were clinical, uncynical and simply just too good for Ireland, well done to them...Ireland took the field with some kind of hotch-potch game plan that following Savea's hammer-blow 1st try the team knew wasn't going to then work, the big problem for Ireland was that there was no plan B, and after the try they could only play the original flawed plan in a panicky and unassured way, as they looked like a team who had lost confidence in what they were trying to do to win. Kearney was totally responsible for the first try (and partially for another) by standing off and guarding space instead of shooting directly into Savea who he gave the crucial 4 yards to get up an unstoppable head of steam to score. The match was over then, as we watched a totally uncomposed Ireland battle on with the most lax defensive system I've ever seen in a long time. Most of the NZ tries were actually soft tries and the Irish players are far better defenders than the schoolboy naievity they showed today in attack and defence...something is seriously wrong with the coaching of Ireland and it's an embaressement to these players as in the majority they are far far better than they showed today. Sexton with Murray for starters has always been a non runner, when is the coach going to get this through his thick head? Every time Murray kicked NZ capitalized, will we ever learn that NZ like getting the ball and are the best team in the world with it in hand!! The frustration is, that Kidney is now going to start the next match with O' Gara and Reddan and I can disclose to The All Blacks that Ireland's game plan will be to pin them into their 22 in the hope of keeping them out of the Irish half...I'm tortured thinking we've another 2 games of this and more so when I know the Irish players are so much better than this. But NZ you were brilliant...HELP!

Well done all blacks, a master class in how to play the modern game. Counter attacking and offloading was unreal. Ireland showed glimpses of good, Ryan and Tuohy in second row showed that they should start regularly. Fitz did very well in front row, Best was good, O Brien good apart from a few knock ons and missed tackles, but that's nothing new for him. Thought Earls did well and despite o driscoll not being the force he used to be in attack, his vision, defence and positional play is incredible. Bad points. Murray was awful, killed any momentum in attack with slow ball and bad decision making.Heaslip showed that he should be dropped if we had a better 8. O mahony ok but nowhere near Ferris' pedegree. Zebo looked good ball in hand but his defence and positional play were very poor, caused smiths try, same for mc fadden, inexperience caused the first try, stupid double tackle and missed the blatant switch which the ABs had done over and over already in the game. Bowe was very badly missed today. Kearneys defence is still a concern for me but he looked good at times going forward, didn't really get the ball to attack much. All in all nice to see young players get experience, as soon as we get rid of kidney we will become better team, clear be cannot devise tactics to compete in the modern game and we get cut open by expansive counter attacking teams regularely. But well done to the all blacks, clinical for 60 minutes and showed why they deserve to be the world champions. Great nation and great people apart from a handful of Kiwi idiots on here who let their country down and make people cheer against them.

amazing from the allblacks in all aspects from all players. basically every irish player taught rugby lessons by their opposite numbers. ireland very lucky they didnt go down by more. disgraceful jersey pulling should have been a yellow at least if not red. crowd got their moneys worth thats for sure. man of the match is a strange paragraph especially having kearney mentioned he got schooled by dagg, AB front row and conrad should be added.

@BokAvenger - You have some real Jealousy problems mate. Criticizing the AB's is one thing but making petty cheating claims is another & it's a really low blow.

The AB's earn wins with their passion for the jersey, their gameplan, & their accuracy & It has always been that way.

Not sure why Irish fans blame Kidney. It's quite clear now Crusaders and Chiefs would do similarly well vs Leinster and Munster. There's a huge divide between Irish rugby and NZ rugby. It's why they're 8th in the world. As for criticising the narrow defense... You have to. AB wingers score loads of tries because of the threat their centres pose. Also they're bloody good because everyone wants to be an AB winger.
