Etzebeth cited for gouging

Eben Etzebeth South Africa 2012

In hot water: Eben Etzebeth

Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth has been cited for making contact with the "eye or eye area" of Scotland fly-half Greig Laidlaw.

The alleged incident occurred in the second-half of South Africa's 21-10 victory at Murrayfield on Saturday.

21-year-old Etzebeth will appear before an International Rugby Board disciplinary hearing on Tuesday.

South Africa play England at Twickenham on Saturday.

The IRB's recommended sanctions for any player found guilty of 'eye-gouging' range from a low entry point of 12 weeks to a high entry point of 24 weeks with a maximum possible ban of three years.

Meanwhile, Argentina prop Juan Figallo has been cited for head-butting France captain Pascal Pape at the end of the Pumas' 39-22 defeat in Lille on Saturday.

Figallo's hearing is listed for Wednesday. Argentina face Ireland in Dublin on Saturday.

Why have the Samoans not been cited for the senseless head butt on bigger in the welsh game ! In past times this would have Ben dealt with on the pitch maybe we should go back to legal tugging and beating the crap out of anyone who attacks your team mates

SACanuck says...

Is he not innocent until proven guilty? Seems some people judge before the verdict. Does seem strange that a week before the English test a Pom citing officer brings the allegations forward at the last minute though.

@bokAvenger - Your comments is stupid - WHO CITED the player was it the Scotland management or others?

Spartacus says...

@APV1 - any evidence to back up your bile? If we are talking the "incident" 14 minutes into the second half then this is a load of b*llocks and questions need to be answered about whether the RFU man was contacted by anyone from RFU before citing Etzebeth. That is a simple question to answer isnt it?

@APV - While your response is certainly over the top, I do hear you. There are "certain" Saffas that potray a mix of ignorance & superiority complex.... & it's not a pleasant mix.

That's not to say that I have anything against South Africa & it's people.

As with any society, there will always be problems. It's part of the imperfection of humanity.

@Spartacus - "whereas a week ago he would have been able to spin the wheel of punishments." Haha nice quote.

That's really a mediocre posts, APV1. Generalising is never good, old chum.

@BokAvenger - if he commited an offence he should be punished - that's hardly a conspiracy. Unless you mean they are conspiring to enforce discipline..?

It is just in their nature to be stupidly aggressive

Oh for goodness sake.

BokAvenger - you sound a tad overwrought and paranoid. A week or so ago this forum was filled with posters claiming a conspiracy against Australia simply because PR thought they'd struggle against France. When did rugby fans become such irrational types?

APV1 - I had similar issues with 'Justice' following the RWC final and a gouging claim. He claimed 'all' French players, fans and people were somehow flawed and terrible and you now do the same for all 'Saffas' because of one player. How so? You've just slandered some great players and many, many great people. Acceptable? No.

Ok, now I know now what Saffas mean when they say Etzebeth is the new Bakkies!

@leebok, no he'd get 8 weeks, not 1. He is from SA after all and you know how fair the rugby judicial system is on Bok players....

BokAvenger says...

@Ape-version 1: For a second there I thought you were talking about England football supporters. But tell me, if all Saffas are just a bunch of stupid thugs then how did we manage to win two world cups in less than half the time it took the IRB's marketing gimmick to do the same?

@APV1: I'd say you're pushing it a little including all 62 million South Africans in YOUR balanced comment. Feel free to take it back before you completely ruin your credibility.

Stomping, trodding, trample or head butt ain't so bad - but eye gouge should get the maximum every time.

Silly boy, despite his tender years and lack of experience he is garnering something of a reputation. First headbutts Sharpe in front of ref and receives two weeks, now this.

@APV1

Easy there! BokAvenger is an idiot and more deserving of football than rugby, but he doesn't represent all Bok supporters. It's hard to not get drawn into my country vs your country bigotry but if we do we'll just be like him! And I know no one wants to be like him...no one....not a single one in over 7 billion people. I'm sure there are Bok supporters on here who'll back me up when I say that they'll think BokAvenger is an idiot for writing such a thing.

@BokAvenger

You really are a sad sad individual and an embarrassment to your country, your friend and family, and yourself. Don't comment if you have nothing to add.

If he did eye gouge then I hope they throw the book at him as there is no place for it in the game. However I have not seen it, so I echo Spartacus's comment, does anyone have a photo or video of the incident?

Armchairgeneral says...

@APV1. How's the foreign diplomacy course getting on? Have you not covered the section on how to deal with Bok tw@ts yet? All Bok fans / all saffas? Thugs? Easy tiger! I cant think of an example to prove you wrong but there must be one. As you were provoked by Bokavenger who has made several people snap I think a 1 day ban from PR posting should be a fair penalty. And a warning for Bokavenger, not that that will do anything. Etzebeth? 24 weeks. Bok locks are guilty till proven innocent.

new_j4a says...

@APV1 steady on old chap...no call for this sort of comment..."You're like all Bok supporters and Saffas the world over. A stupid thug. All brawn and no brains. Just like all Saffas. You probably think gouging is acceptable" I know at least 27 decent saffas personally and with me that's 28 at least,...may even be more for all we know....never can be quite sure after they go out to the colonies, what? They go wild in the bush, some of them.
