Two-week ban for Greyling

Dean Greyling having a run for Springboks

Greyling: Suspended for two weeks

Springbok prop Dean Greyling has been suspended for two weeks for a forearm smash to the face of All Blacks captain Richie McCaw in Saturday's Rugby Championship match in Dunedin.

Greyling will miss the Springboks' next match, against Australia in Pretoria on September 29.

He admitted hitting McCaw in the 64th minute of Saturday's clash, which was won by the All Blacks 21-11, when he appeared before SANZAR judicial officer Paul Tully on Sunday.

"Greyling, whilst in the process of cleaning out at a ruck, recklessly used his forearm such that he made contact in a dangerous way with the head of New Zealand player Richie McCaw," Tully said.

"Although there was no injury complained of, the action had potential to cause serious injury."

Lock Eben Etzebeth, who was banned for two weeks for a headbutt in their previous Test against Australia, will be back for the return match.

Springbok's coach Heyneke Meyer apologised to McCaw after the match and said Greyling's behaviour had cost them the game.

"We're a team that prides ourselves on discipline and we can't afford these things in games," Meyer said.

Skipper Jean de Villiers also said Greyling would face internal action.

"We'll never condone playing dirty," de Villiers said.

So Eben Etzebeth gets a 2-week ban for hardly touching Nathan Sharpe's chin with his forehead... (and don't come to me with the stupid argument of "intent" - if Etzebeth "intended" to headbutt Nathan Sharpe, Nathan Sharpe would've been on his backside instead of mouthing to the ref "did you see that Miss! did you see that!") ... and now Dean Greyling, flying into a ruck with the sole purpose of taking out Richie McCaw as hard as possible with his elbow in a vulgar act of foul play which is not even allowed in cage fighting, ALSO gets 2 weeks...

Either I am crazy, or the Citing Commissioner is as crazy as Heineke Meyer.

@ Realbull... watch the video fumbduck, if McCaw was ever offside he'd been well & truly put back onside by those SA players who actually stayed within the Laws... then Greyling dives in forearm-first making no attempt to do anything other than cause an injury. Instant red card, minimum 6 weeks suspension.

Good to see most saffas on here know that what Greyling did has nothing to do with rugby & want him to be properly sanctioned for it. I'm hoping HM puts his words into some kind of action, e.g. cutting the asshole from his squad.

Probably won't happen but what if Greyling gets picked for the return match & an AB goes out & targets his head? Does that player get a slap on the wrist or made an example of? That's why this sort of sh1t has to be dealt with quickly & harshly.

Cleaning out at the ruck in the Bok rugby dictionary = opportunity to smash opponents heads in direct collisions off the ball to have them removed from the field. If administered poorly the management will dissown the player as a thug for the greater good of protecting the tactic in future games

Read the decision:"Greyling, whilst in the process of cleaning out at a ruck" "recklessly"

McCaw was already clear out, Greyling jumped over the top of ruck the express purpose of hitting in the face with the elbow. These guys are pulling the other one, is this the same guy who cleared Schalk Burger of eye gouging on the Lions tour in 2009. They are opening themselves to ridicule. Even the most blantant evidence in caught in glorious high def and slow motion they still can't find anyone actually guilty of being a "dirty player" per sae. Or in the cases of Rougerie (head butt followed by eye gouge) and McLaughlin earlier this year (triple eye gouge, again and again, and again he accidentally contacted the eyes) they get no punishment at all.

FISH: "mc cheat gets away with more stop moaning kiwi losers". Huh? Where did you see a "kiwi loser" complain about this?

More to the point, when last did you see a kiwi lose? And I presume you think what school yard bully Greyling did was OK? Moron.

Pretty light sentence, I thought it was deliberate and warranted a few more missed games...shouldn't it be a ban for matches not a time ban? Perhaps they deemed it only enough for a one match ban and gave him two weeks to cover?

McCaw is awesome, shrugs it off in his typical manner and moves on. Of course McCaw gets in the way and probably purposely attracts these fools to do this to him, great team player.

@FISH...Kiwi losers? Try World Champs, Bledisloe cup holders, freedom cup holders, multiple grand slamers and about to be crowned inaugural RC winners.

@Grtrunninglines: Diddums! If you tell uncle Fry where you're from I'm sure we can rustle up some acts of dirty play by players from your country so you don't feel left out.

@Grtrunninglines. You cannot tranish a entire rugby country as being dirty. We play hard and we do not condone dirty play. 2 weeks is way too low.

After watching his contribution yesterday i would think all the Springbok fans are devastated he only got a two week ban.

That's hillarious 'recklessly used his forearm such that he made contact in a dangerous way':) More like he deliberately targeted McCaw's head with an intention to hurt. Although it is admirable that Meyer & de Villiers have denounced this act "We'll never condone playing dirty", there most certainly is a long history of thuggery more than any other nation perhaps with France. Whether its Johan Le Roux biting the ear of Sean Fitzpatrick, Schalk Burger eye-gouge of Luke Fitzgerald & David Pocock, Corne Krige elbowing Martin Johnson in the face, Bakkies Botha headbutting Jimmy Cowan, Butch James and Eben Etzebeth's latest effort. Wonderful sportsmanship!

What a sham, last week 2 weeks for a head butt that never made contact, never more than a yellow card/ 1 match and now this idiot is given 2 for a something that warrants 6 minimum.

I hope as SA fan that they punch him internally to set a president to everyone. The boks always play a physical game that not all can take but this was just cheap and not what boks are about. HM do the right thing, glad to hear him apologies straight away on the boks behalf.

2weeks ,just 2 weeks ,his a very very lucky man ,It should have been 6-8 wks at least for that a blatant piece of foul play

kid_diablo says...

yes two weeks is far too short but it doesn't really matter in this case because the guy will probably never be selected again

Justice served! Greyling banned for 2 weeks and Mcaw has a head ache, he will think twice next time before lying on the wrong side of ruck.

Yup, as I suspected, Greyling got a letter from Bans Blix telling him he was very, very disapointed in him. 2 weeks for a deliberate elbow to the head is a joke.

I think South Africa will contest this. There is no way they will want that idiot to miss just one game.

I like the way Mayer is now using Grayling as an excuse that the Boks lost, it is his P**s Poor management that is costing the Boks the games, there was no need to substetute Beast for Grayling anyway and why is Graying in the squad in the first place Heneke?
