England notched up a second victory on their tour of South Africa thanks to a 57-31 win over the SA Barbarians North in Potchefstroom.
The visitors crossed the whitewash on seven occassions with full-back Nick Abendanon bagging a hat-trick, whilst Jonny May touched down twice.
England number eight Ben Morgan and centre Anthony Allen also got their names on the scoresheet, while they also benefited from a penalty try and Charlie Hodgson scored 17 points.
However, the winning result for the tourists was marred by a serious injury to winger Ugo Monye who appeared to knock himself out in a tackle and had to be stretchered from the field.
England may have won by a convincing margin at Profert Olen Park but were given a tough workout by a South African scratch side who scored four tries themselves.
It was a bruising encounter for a side starting with two of the players involved in the second Test loss in Johannesburg last weekend in Morgan and Lee Dickson.
The Northern Barbarians started at a high pace and were first on the board courtesy of a penalty by full-back JC Roos in the sixth minute. However it was not long before veteran fly-half Hodgson leveled the scores.
The hosts kept putting England under immense pressure but good defence from the visitors denied the Baa-Baas, until centre Joubert Engelbrecht scored a try in the corner set up by captain JW Jonker.
England were jolted awake and it was not long before Abendanon went over for the visitors' opening try of the match after some good attacking play. Hodgson converted to again level the scores (10-10).
England took the lead for the first time in the 23rd minute after Morgan powered his way over for a converted try, before play was interrupted for about six minutes with Monye being carried of the field with a neck injury.
The lapse in play resulted in a break in concentration and some sloppy handling followed.
Winger Christian Wade - who scored a hat-trick against the Southern Barbarians in Kimberley last week - almost dotted down on the half-hour mark, only to be bumped out on the corner flag.
Abendanon then scored his second five-pointer of the evening after showcasing some fancy footwork, and was at it again just before half-time. Hodgson converted to give his side a 31-10 at the break.
The break halted England's momentum and the Barbarians finally scored in the 53rd minute when scrum-half Shaun Venter dummied and dived over for a converted try.
After England flank Jamie Gibson was yellow-carded for a late tackle, it left the visitors one man short and Venter went over for his second try.
England regained the upper hand when replacement Johnny May went over in the corner. May then bagged his brace which Hodgson duly converted, before Allen also found his way to the tryline as the wheels came off for the home side in the last ten minutes.
Winger Deon Scholtz scored a consolation try for the South African side near the end, but England had the last laugh when referee Mark Lawrence awarded a penalty try to the visitors on the final whistle.

For SA Barbarians North:

Yeah, I know what you mean. Either he was being clumsy not using his arms for the tackle, which is a penalty, or he went into the tackle with the deliberate intent to elbow Wade in the face, which is a penalty and a yellow card. Didn't understand why they went for a scrum in the end.
Plus, if he had scored the try then that would have been the end of it, no repercussion for the player. I think when a player using dangerous methods (e.g. elbow to the face) to stop a try then a penalty try should be awarded no matter what, just to make the conversion easier. Shouldn't let dangerous play go just because they scored.

@NHsaints - the scoreline again wasn't brilliant in terms of tries leaked, but get your facts right; this was an England scratch side (they're not the first team nor are they the Saxons - it's an amalgam of players from both) against ostensibly a Pumas team. It was an entertaining game and some players, for both teams, looked really good. That's all there is to take from it.

Starting to get very concerned with the practice of flying off the feet to knock over/out players diving for the line...last nights example on Wade where the lad led with his elbow could have been nasty but seems to be the accepted norm. To top it off it was'nt even considered to be foul play...5 metre defending scrum???????

Glad for the win.
Hope UM is ok and recovers fully and quickly.
Defence was not good on occassion - the first try was a good example.
Some improvements, some disappointments.
I watched the match last night and was left feeling a little ambivalent towards it and a little cold.
I've always reated Abendanon, so I was particularly pleased to see him do well.

NHsaints, to be fair they were playing at altitude and near the end of the game they looked knackered. The northern barbarians side would be used to the conditions, plus that was an England side that hasn't played much together.

Wouldn't read too into the match. Not sure why the Sky crew talk down the whole England team so much when this is a completely different team.
Entertaining match. Exactly what was wanted.

That's a seriously dissapointing scoreline from England, I expected no less than a 30 point margin from a team of this level against a scratched together provincial side...Good from May, Dickson and Abendanon though. I'd be tempted to Either Put may on the wing for strettle in the final test or put foden on the wing and abendanon at fullback.

Get Johny May in the main 22. Ideally starting. He's the complete package and has been all season.

Some positives. The scrum went well. I think Abendanon, May, Fearns, and Dickson really put their hands up. Plus it was great to see Youngs throwing and Wades defence doing much better. Both of them with May are great prospects for the future.
However, it's a shame that the teams defence wasn't up to scratch in general, Morgan's defence was still weak. Also, was very disappointed that they weren't able to keep the intensity up for the second half.

Again watched the match, and England where always in control of it .Would have liked a bigger score line ,but then like the SA barbars its a scratch side ,so not to disappointed.Good showings for L.Dickson ,B.morgon ,Robson and Aberdanon, and a host of others .Better attacking game .but defence does need some love atm ,as its not as good as in the 6Ns imo.Time maybe for D.Ellis to join the 3 wise men imo

Lol... England did a lot of things - but "cruise" wasn't one of them.
According to Richard Anderson's logic last week, who claimed that England "had the beating of the Boks" because they came within a score, you'll be more accurate to report the the SA Barbarians had the beating of England - because not only did they draw level early on, they also then faught back and came within 7 points!
