Cautious: Alasdair Dickinson

Scotland prop Alasdair Dickinson has underlined the necessity for his team to front up physically against an imposing Springbok side.

Dickinson started in Scotland's 17-30 loss to South Africa earlier this year in Nelspruit in a bad-tempered clash that saw Scott Johnson's team finish second best whilst putting the Springboks under pressure.

Now on home turf at Murrayfield, Dickinson is ready for the tussle ahead on Sunday.

"You have got to be physical. They are renowned for being such a big, physical side," said Dickinson.

"You have to match that, do the basics really well and put in a consistent performance. It will be tight but hopefully we can get a great win.

"I think it went well in parts [against South Africa]. There were obviously some things where we lacked concentration and slipped up a few times.

"It's getting a consistent performance that we are aiming for and it will be tough against the Springboks."

Scotland were pushed by Japan last weekend, only leading 18-17 at one stage, before breaking away late on.

Dickinson put the rustiness down to the group gradually getting used to one another once again, but admitted an improvement was needed.

"The first game is always tough because all the guys play for different clubs and you only get a certain amount of time together so it's hard and you need to blow a few cobwebs away," added Dickinson.

"We are just looking for improvement this weekend. South Africa are a formidable force and it will be tough."
