Paterson eyes Murrayfield victory

Chris Paterson

Scottish centurion: Paterson

Centurion Chris Paterson believes Scotland will claim victory over Japan in their opening November Test at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Paterson won 109 Scotland caps, and is also the country's record points scorer.

As Scottish Rugby's specialist coach, the ex-international thinks coach-in-waiting Vern Cotter will not impose himself heavily on current boss Scott Johnson and his players.

"They have to win and I think they will win," Paterson told BBC Scotland.

"Vern will respect Scott and the players and let them get on with what they want to do."

Cotter will take over from Johnson - who led Scotland to a third-place finish in this year's Six Nations - in June 2014, with the latter moving to a position as Director of Rugby.

But Paterson believes the present incumbent will not be overly-affected by the new man.

"There will be a lot of joined-up thinking between Scott and Vern, they'll have been in contact constantly since it was announced that Vern was getting the job," said Paterson.

"There may be an influence on Scott Johnson, but it'll be a behind-closed-doors thing.

"They'll be trying to formulate the best plan and the best way forward to make the transition between Scott and Vern, but from the players' point of view, there won't be a distraction."
