A hard-fought win saw France recover from a slow start as Elodie Guiglion scored twice after the interval to give the home crowd something to cheers about at Stade Jean Bouin.

Ireland took the early lead via a try and conversion from full-back Niamh Briggs. The hosts levelled the scores soon afterward though as captain Gaelle Mignot crashed over at the back of a maul from a line-out as France put their set-piece supremacy to good use.

France replied to a Briggs penalty to move ahead for the first time at 12-10 in the 31st minute thanks to a try out wide from Jessy Tremouliere.

Ireland held a 15-12 lead at the interval though after Grace Davitt scored a classic chip-and-chase try.

Briggs and Tremouliere exchanged penalties early in the second period but it was France who took control after the break, Guiglion scoring to put them 20-18 up.

In a tense finale Guiglion touched down again to secure the win and a place on the podium.

The earlier on Sunday, outgoing champions New Zealand ran nine tries past the USA - including four for Honey Hireme - to win 55-5 and claim fifth place
