Ireland boss Joe Schmidt claimed legendary centre Brian O'Driscoll could make a "great coach" after Saturday's Paris triumph.

O'Driscoll signed off a glittering fifteen-year Test career with a second Six Nations Championship as Ireland saw off France 20-22 in match that kept the title hanging in the balance right until the final whistle.

And New Zealander Schmidt, who coached the veteran at Leinster before taking on the top Irish job from Declan Kidney in 2013, reckons O'Driscoll has what it takes to become a successful coach, though his priorities are elsewhere just now.

"He'll be good at whatever he does," Schmidt told reporters on Saturday.

"In the short term that's probably house-husband but in the long term he'd make a great coach."

Schmidt also revealed the issue of O'Driscoll's Test retirement, massively hyped-up in the media as the game approached, did not have a bearing on his own preparations for Paris.

"I just tapped him on the shoulder and said, "It's a special day. You don't know how many you are going to get in a career,"" added Schmidt.

""He'd love this one to be particularly special. Let's make sure we do the best we can to make sure that happens.""
